When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

On Monday's show of
February 17, 2025, our host Elaine B. Holtz,
Joining me in the studio today
is Dr. Raquell Holmes. Dr.
Holmes is a computational cell
biologist and a pioneer in
building inclusive,
developmental science
communities with improvisation.
Dr. Holmes is joining me today
to talk about the Freedom
Festival that takes place from
Juneteenth 19 which is June 19
thru Independence Day (July
4th).
The Freedom Festival Events will
be offered “from California to
the New York Island”—in-person
and online via Zoom all year
round. These will include
conversations about what freedom
means to us, about justice and
liberty, about Black activists
and artists across history.
You might be wondering
exactly what the Freedom
Festival is all about. Well,
that is what we will learn via
this first of three interviews.
Since Valentine's Day was on
Friday, as is our tradition for
5 years Ken and I will read my
Friends and Lovers
poem in the beginning of the
show.
Our
Guest Dr. Raquell Holmes,
co-creator of The Freedom
Festival USA, initiated
the event after George Floyd's
murder to foster uncomfortable
yet necessary conversations
about race and class in a safe
space. Inspired by Juneteenth
becoming a national holiday, Dr.
Holmes aimed to celebrate
freedom and independence,
inviting everyone to share their
stories. The festival features
workshops, art exhibits, and
conversations, curated on the
Freedom Festival USA
website to encourage
participation. Influenced by Dr.
Lenora Fulani, Dr. Holmes gained
the confidence to create
opportunities for community
engagement. People can get
involved by visiting
freedomfestivalusa.org ,
attending meetings,
volunteering, or donating. The
festival spans from Juneteenth
to July 4th, offering 16 days to
explore and celebrate freedom
and independence, from
emancipation to Independence
Day.

On Monday's show of
February 10, 2025, our host Elaine B. Holtz, February is
Black History Month, and today’s show honors impactful Black
women. I’ll play Maya Angelou’s Still I Rise, an anthem
of resilience, and discuss activist Ida B. Wells. We’ll also
feature Strange Fruit, Billie Holiday’s haunting song
about lynchings.
The 2025 Black History Month theme is African Americans and
Labor, marking the 100th anniversary of the Brotherhood of
Sleeping Car Porters and Maids (BSCP). Women played a vital but
overlooked role, forming the Women’s Economic Councils. Leaders
like Rosina C. Tucker and Frances Albrier fought for workers’
rights, paving the way for future activism. Their courage and
impact continue to inspire.

February 3, 2025, our host Elaine B. Holtz, comments:
Elaine’s commentary intertwines personal
reflection with activism, resilience, and community. She shares her
recovery from a knee injury, expressing gratitude for immigrant
healthcare workers and reflecting on global divisions. Viewing her
accident as a lesson in acceptance, she connects it to broader
struggles, advocating for historical awareness and collective
action.
She highlights threats to women’s
rights, including the closure of Sonoma State’s Women’s and
Gender Studies department, and honors Black History Month by
recognizing African American labor contributions, including the
Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters’ centennial. She celebrates
Leonard Peltier’s upcoming release as a triumph of perseverance.
Reflecting on the Chinese New Year,
Elaine urges embracing change and strengthening community ties.
Inspired by songs like Light a Candle and Standing on the
Shoulders, she calls for continued activism, kindness, and hope.
At 84, she remains committed to shaping a better world through
action, gratitude, and connection.

On Monday's show of
January 20, 2025, our host Ken Norton, standing in for Elaine B. Holtz, comments:
Ken opened Women’s Spaces by introducing
himself as the substitute host for Elaine B. Holtz, who is
recovering from a fractured tibia sustained on January 1. Ken and
Elaine have been navigating a spiritual healing Journey,
which will be explored further in an interview with Rev. Dr.
Patricia Keel.
Ken shared community news, announcing
the recent passing of notable individuals: Joe Wang, husband of
Nancy Wang of the Redwood Empire Chinese Association; Ernesto
Sanchez, brother of Alicia Sanchez, President of Radio KBBF; and
John Turngren, brother of Mary Norman. Condolences were extended
to their families.
He also acknowledged Martin Luther King
Jr. Day, noting celebrations in Sonoma and Napa counties and
community service events planned for the day.
Lastly, Ken reported that President Joe
Biden declared the Equal Rights Amendment has met constitutional
requirements, though he has not yet directed its official
inclusion in the Constitution.
Our Guest, Rev. Dr.
Patricia Keel, in
conversation with our host Ken
Norton explores spiritual
practices for healing, stress
management, and
self-transformation, bridging
Unity teachings and Indian
traditions. Ken recalls a
stressful January 2021 week that
included an insurrection at our
nation's capitol and Reverend
Patricia Keel’s guidance on
transformation in the January 4,
2021 Women's Spaces Show. Rev.
Patricia shares her journey into
Unity Ministry, inspired by
personal struggles with
addiction and the peace she
found in Unity, particularly
Myrtle Fillmore’s faith-based
self-healing from tuberculosis,
foundational to Unity
principles.
Indian practices like pranayama
(breath control) are explored,
emphasizing their role in
activating subtle energies such
as prana (vitality), ojas
(immunity), and tejas (tissue
intelligence). Patricia connects
these with Unity teachings on
the mind-body-spirit
relationship. Practical tools
like conscious breathing and the
prayerful “namaskar” position
are highlighted for calming and
balancing effects, with Ken
sharing how these methods helped
him overcome anxiety.
Rev. Patricia emphasizes the
importance of being present and
accepting, referencing the song
Let It Be. Ken
underscores mindfulness,
particularly for older
individuals, sharing a story
about his 98-year-old mother’s
fall and the importance of
awareness and adaptation.
Healing is central to the
discussion, with Rev. Patricia
reflecting on supporting loved
ones through health challenges
and her own recovery from a car
accident. She highlights
focusing on the divine vitality
within oneself and others to
avoid amplifying distress.
Ken recounts Elaine’s spiritual
Journey after
her fall, noting
synchronicities, like
caregivers’ names beginning with
“J,”
reinforcing the Journey
with universal connection. He
reflects on spiritual journeys
as aligning with one’s true
self, beyond societal
expectations. Falls are viewed
as metaphors for challenges that
strengthen us, with Ken
referencing the 23rd Psalm to
illustrate life’s varied
experiences and the constant
presence of a guiding force. The
conversation concludes with an
understanding of life’s
challenges as essential to
spiritual growth and connection.
On Monday March 5, 2018,
Elaine interviewed
Gloria Allred,
who shares her journey from teacher to
attorney advocating for
women's rights for 40 years. Gloria talks of
what sustains her in her committment to social change.
Gloria's hope is that this year will be known as the Year of Empowerment for
Women, and she certainly is a mentor as she confronts rich and
powerful men Harvey Weinstein, Judge Roy Moore, Bill Cosby, O.J.
Simpson and even the President Bill Clinton of the United States as she
represents courageous but hurt women.
On Monday June 15, 2020
Gloria Allred returned for a second visit to Women's Spaces
to talks about her friend and client Norma McCorvey, the
"Jane Roe" whose unwanted pregnancy led to the 1973 case
that legalized abortion nationwide, Roe v. Wade, who is
portrayed with her "deathbed confession" in the FX film aka Jane Roe,
of switching from the volunteer and unpaid poster child of
the Pro-Choice movement to become the
paid-with-over-$450,000 poster child of the Pro-Life of
Fetus movement Operation Rescue. Ms. Allred asserts, as does
Norma in her confession that she was always Pro-Choice.
Erin Brockovich
was our second guest on the show ,
of July 9, 2018.
Erin shares her story on becoming one of the
most successful consumer activists in taking on PG&E in Hinkley, CA,
in 1993, about which a movie was made called Erin Brockovich.
Erin encourages us to break free from the box of other's
expectations and to develop the self-esteem needed for the
long and persistent fight for justice. Erin comes to Sonoma
County to help those who were victims of last October wildfire storm
that appears to have been sparked by PG&E's negligent behaviour
in
protecting their equipment from nearby brush and trees as required
as a public utility. Erin warns of legislation that would shield
PG&E from accountability in future wildfire disasters in California,
inspite of the corporation's vast wealth.
