When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by
our Host, Elaine B. Holtz: Elaine's
commentary blends personal
reflection with broader social
issues, emphasizing resilience,
activism, and community. She
begins by recounting her knee
injury and recovery, expressing
gratitude for the care she
received, particularly from
immigrant healthcare workers,
and reflecting on global
divisions.
Seeing her accident as a journey
of acceptance, she ties it to
larger struggles, urging
historical awareness and
collective action. She
acknowledges ongoing challenges
in women’s rights, including the
closure of Sonoma State’s
Women’s and Gender Studies
department, and recalls her
early exposure to feminist
history.
In honor of Black History Month,
she highlights the role of
African Americans in labor,
celebrating the 100th
anniversary of the Brotherhood
of Sleeping Car Porters and
stressing the importance of
remembering past struggles. She
also welcomes news of Leonard
Peltier’s impending release
after nearly 50 years in prison,
seeing his story as one of
resilience against injustice.
Reflecting on the Chinese New
Year (Year of the Snake), Elaine
encourages embracing change and
fostering community ties. She
underscores the value of knowing
one’s neighbors for creating
safety and unity. Inspired by
Neil Young’s Light a Candle, she
urges listeners to take action
for justice and remain hopeful.
At 84, Elaine contemplates
life’s purpose, moved by Becky
Hobbs’ Pale Moon. She believes
in the power of love, kindness,
and connection, questioning why
humanity can achieve
technological feats but struggle
to find peace. Citing Standing
on the Shoulders, she honors
past trailblazers like Shirley
Chisholm and Fannie Lou Hamer,
emphasizing the ongoing fight
for equality.
Elaine calls for persistence in
activism, reminding listeners
that change starts with
action—writing, connecting, and
speaking out. She closes with
gratitude and a plea for
kindness, urging continued
engagement in creating a better
world.
Special thank you to
