When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
I have a very special
guest this morning. Joining me
on the phone is Amani Shroff is
one of the youngest women I have
interviewed to date. She wrote
me telling me what she is doing
and after talking with her I
knew she needed to be on the
program. I was amazed at what
she has accomplished as a young
woman and wanted to support her
and all her efforts. Our
children are the future, and
they are fighting for a future,
and we all need to listen to
them and support them. After
all, when you truly look at the
world, I know I must ask myself,
what is the future for the
upcoming generations.
Announcements:
To celebrate the National
Women’s History Alliance and
Women’s Equality Day, which is
August 26, next week's show on Monday
August 21, will feature a
converstation with Molly Murphy
MacGregor, one of the founders
of the National Women’s History
Project, now known as the
National Women’s History
Alliance, to talk about Women’s
Equality Day and the event
ERA: The Time is Now
webinar, which the Alliance is
hosting on August 19. To
register for the webinar, visit
https://nationalwomenshistoryalliance.org/events/
Another great event is happening
on Monday August 21 in the
evening. The National
Organization for Women, SOCO
Chapter, will be having their
monthly Zoom meeting, which this
month is open to members and
guests. The special speaker will
be Zakiya Thomas, President and
CEO of the ERA Coalition and
Fund for Women’s Equality. I had
her on as a guest
last week, and for those who
missed that important interview
this is an opportunity to listen
to some important history and
how we can help move this
amendment along. For the life of
me I cannot understand what has
taken so long to get the Equal
Rights Amendment added to the
Constitution, but it is going to
happen and will happen if women
get educated about the ERA and
speak out.
Commentary:
Hawaii is burning and climate
change marches on. Like in Maui,
Paradise, CA was quickly
overcome and destroyed by
wildfire, and right here in
Santa Rosa we lost over 2,000
homes to wind-fueled wildfires.
Yet, there are folks that still
believe that climate change is
not a reality and there are
leaders who still support
products and industries that
contribute to this horror. I
just do not understand this. You
know change takes time,
commitment, and courage to bring
about that is why our history is
our strength is a reality. It
tells us what we can do, what it
takes to accomplish it, and it
demonstrates the power of those
who are committed to making it
happen.
You know at one time there were
those who did not believe that
doctors washing their hands were
able to prevent much infection
in surgeries, and they fought
this procedure advocated by Dr.
Ignaz Semmeleis and ridiculed
him. Just look at how careful
surgeons are today. There is a
great article, It Took
Surprisingly Long for Doctors to
Figure Out the Benefits of Hand
Washing, by Becy Little that was
published on March 6, 2020, that
gives the history of what it
took to happen.
https://www.history.com/news/hand-washing-disease-infection
She writes: “It wasn't until the
mid-19th century that doctors
realized going straight from an
autopsy to the maternity ward
was not a good idea.” It took
folks standing up and speaking
out to require that medical
personnel must wash their hands.
A simple thing, right?
2. Our Guest,
Amani Shroff, a high
school student, shares what she
thinks are pressing issues for
the youth. She feels the
Covid-19 pandemic restrictions
deprived youth of social
interaction, the isolation each
felt, and the fast-paced social
media talk create a sense of
overwhelm. Amani was most
inspired by her mother who
encouraged her to use her voice
and be responsible. She was also
inspired through the TV exposure
by Michelle Obama, Ruth Bader
Ginsburg, and Kamela Harris.
Amani sought out women shows and
discovered Women's Spaces. She
reached out to our host Elaine
to share her opinions and
passion to empower youth to make
changes regarding the increasing
gun violence, the deterioration
of the environment, support
public funding of schools and to
learn about policies that affect
the youth. Amani started
her podcast Vantage Point,
available on Spotify, as a means
to spark conversation among the
youth and help them keep
informed. Amani recites
one of her poems, Welcome to Our
World, which is presented
below.
bite your lips until it
bleeds
drink the blood not to waste
any
I will get to eat no more
food today
smiling through the dripping
blood
I will learn the rules then
break them
I will sing-along and bow my
head
I am pious and tread
sacrilege
nothing I have belongs to me
sand sculptures get
swallowed in me
I hold my hands on my head
where the crown is supposed
to be
I tell the easy stories
instead of the true ones
tonight I will be quiet,
tomorrow I will make noise
these invisible girls will
heal their own lips
About our Guest:
Amani Shroff a student
at Carlmont High School and is
very passionate about women's
issues and its connections to
political science.
During the summer of 2022 she
was the social media lead for
young adult outreach for Noelia
Corzo’s successful campaign to
be the first Latina woman on the
San Mateo board of supervisors.
She was part of the group that
crafted an outreach strategy
that helped her come back from a
large deficit, and minimal funds
compared to her competition.
With their efforts we were able
overcome a pre-election deficit
to win by 876 votes.
In working in this
election, she understood the
importance of getting women in
politics and decided to start a
political science podcast called
Vantage Point," where
she discusses government and
policy for youth. She believes
it is important for youth to be
involved in laws that affect
them. She also loves writing
poetry and uses it as a means of
communicating my emotions.
As a first-generation Indian
girl, she often writes about the
treatment of women. She loves to
volunteer at her local temple
and teaches 40 young girls every
Sunday about culture and, most
importantly, to believe in
themselves!
