When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
I have a special guest
for this show, joining me on the
phone from Washington DC will be
Zakiya Thomas is President and
CEO of the ERA Coalition and
Fund for Women’s Equality.
Announcement: Happy 75th
Birthday KBBF and a special
thank you to all who attended
the successful celebration held
at the Luther Burbank Center. It
was amazing. It was so amazing
that I could not sleep Saturday
night just thinking about the
event. Senator McGuire presented
KBBF’s President Alicia Sanchez
with a special proclamation
honoring the fifty years of
service provided by the station
to the community. It was an
amazing experience watching
Senator McGuire help raise
66,000 dollars for the station
which will help its equipment to
enable it to survive for another
fifty years. A special thanks to
all the sponsors and those who
donated to the station.
Special Happy Birthday to Kens
sister Janet Navarra, an amazing
woman. Wishing her only the best
life has to offer, and it was
wonderful celebrating with her.
Got to spend time with our niece
Alicia and our great niece Ila
Blue, what a joy it was.
We are going to take a musical
break and the song I will be
playing is Ain t Gonne Let
Nobody Turn Me Around, sung
by Lydia Violet and time has
demonstrated we are not going to
let anyone turn us around, we
are going forward with the Equal
Rights Amendment. It’s a long
time coming. A bit of history:
Alice
Paul and the Eual Rights
Amendment (ERA)
While women across the
United States gained the
right to vote with the
passage of the Nineteenth
Amendment in 1920, many
feminists believed the fight
for equal gender rights was
just beginning. Alice Paul,
the leader of the National
Woman’s Party, immediately
began to lobby for an
addition to the Constitution
that would provide for the
protection of women’s rights
in general. Beginning in
1923, Paul and her
supporters submitted the
Lucretia Mott Amendment to
Congress yearly until 1942.
In 1943, Paul reworded the
amendment, which became
known as the Alice Paul
Amendment. Paul continued to
submit it to Congress every
year. In 1972, the U.S.
Congress rewrote the
amendment once again and
passed it. The amendment,
now known as the Equal
Rights Amendment (ERA), then
went to the state
legislatures to acquire
ratification. The ERA failed
to be ratified—only
thirty-seven of the
necessary thirty-eight state
legislatures voted to pass
the amendment within the
seven-year deadline.
2. Our Guest,
Zakiya Thomas, is the
President
and CEO of the ERA
Coalition, which with its 320
coalition partners represent
over 80 million people. She is a
black woman who nows the value
of rights. The Equal
Rights Amendment (ERA) states:
Above: Sakiya Thomas
Equal Rights Amendment
Section 1: Equality of
rights under the law shall
not be denied or abridged by
the United States or by any
state on account of sex.
Section 2: The Congress
shall have the power to
enforce, by appropriate
legislation, the provisions
of this article.
Section 3: This amendment
shall take effect two years
after the date of
ratification.”
Zakiya notes that the ERA does
not state "gender" but "sex" as
the defining attribute, so it
would include rights for
LGBTQI+. Our US Constitution was
written mainly by white men who
owned slaves. The ERA is for
everyone. 80% of poled Americans
support the ERA. The 20% who
oppose have used their finances
to obstruct it. The filibuster
rule in the Senate also prevents
it, even though there are bills
in the House of Representatives
and the Senate. Zakiya believes
that since people know already
of the benefit of ERA, we just
need to motivate people.
About our Guest:
Zakiya Thomas
is President and CEO of
the ERA Coalition and Fund for
Women’s Equality. Zakiya is a
change agent, working to make
equality a reality for all
people. Using her experiences as
a political strategist and
nonprofit manager, Zakiya leads
a diverse coalition of three
hundred organizations
representing eighty million
people. This community of
activists advocates for gender,
racial, and reproductive
justice, LGBTQ+ rights, and more
under the unifying goal of sex
equality. Zakiya is also an
Adjunct Professor at Georgetown
Law teaching a nonpartisan
course on how to run for
political office and volunteers
on several nonprofit boards.
