When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Joining me in the
studio is Kirstyne Lange, chair
of the SOCO National Association
for the Advancement of Colored
People NAACP. We will be talking
about the NAACP, its mission,
goals, and challenges, along
with concerns in Sonoma County.
I would like to thank all who
attended the KBBF 50th
Anniversary Celebration at Bayer
Park, It was a fun time for all.
The KBBF 50th Anniversary Gala
Fundraiser is next Thursday,
August 3, 5 to 8 PM, at
the Luther Burbank Center, Santa
Rosa.
On July 25 the Sonoma County
Commission on Human Rights is
presenting the first Kathleen
Finnegan Award to Heather
Jackson of Sonoma County Acts of
Kindness.

2. Our Guest
Kirstyne Lange first
learned about racism in her
kindergarten class in San Diego
when she encountered a boy her
age who called her a monkey and
said she should go back to
Africa. Her grandfather noticed
how upset she was when he picked
her up, and prepared her, as
this would surely not be the
last time. Women in her family,
especially her mother, inspired
and mentored her. Her parents
knew about the National
Association for the Advancement
of Colored People (NAACP) and
the Civil Rights movement. By
the time she was in the 8th or
9th grade, the violence against
People of Color increased, and
the President of the local
chapter of the NAACP established
outreach to the youth and signed
up youth members form different
high schools, including herself.
Kirstyne learned how to plan
events and take on issues.
The NAACP was founded in 1909.
It has been an intergenerational
cultivation of leaders. Leaders
cultivated leaders in the next
generation, so branches do not
fold, and the torch is passed.
After the murder of George
Floyd, Kirstyne became active in
the Sonoma County Chapter of the
NAACP and has made it a point to
encouraged collaboration between
Black and Native cultures.
There are challenges in this
county. The Portrait of Sonoma
County report of 2021 (See
insert under Reference below)
looked at Blacks and Native
American populations in the
county. This only happened after
the County in 2020 said that
Blacks and Native Americans are
insignificant in population.
This raised the ire of the
NAACP, since their populations
are the size of Cotati and other
Sonoma County towns, and they
pressed the County to include
them in the new report of 2021.
Kirstyne cites this as an
example of people coming
together to effect change. She
encourages our audience to get
involved. Become an active
member in one of the NAACP
committees, where issue
priorities are set and then
shared with the public. She
says, "Fight with us, not
alone."
About our Guest:
Kirstyne Lange is a
native of San Diego, CA where
she served on San Diego
CityCouncils’ 4th District Youth
Advisory Board (YAB) to help
curb the rampant gang violence.
She also served on the Mills
College Intersectional
Anti-Racism Team as an alumni
perspective and expert in this
field.
Kirstyne has a Bachelor of Arts
Degree in Public Policy from
Mills College where she then
served as a Mills College Board
of Governor, advocating for
current student programs, recent
graduate programs, admissions
initiatives to foster
accessibility to Oakland
natives, and the Alumnae of
Color Committee.
Kirstyne received her master’s
degree in public administration
with an emphasis in Nonprofit
Management from Sonoma State
University and was a founding
board member of the Sonoma
County IOLERO – CAC, advocating
for safer policing and sheriff
oversight to help improve
policies. She is presently the
Chair of SOCO NAACP.
Black, Indigenous, People of
Color (BIPOC), and immigrant
and undocumented community
members persistently scored
lower than other
populations.
The Black community
experienced the largest
decline in HDI scores since
2014, while scores for
Latinos have increased.
Latino, Native American, and
Native Hawaiian and Other
Pacific Island residents of
Sonoma County have the
lowest median personal
earnings among the major
racial and ethnic groups,
about $29,000, $29,000, and
$26,000, respectively.
3 percent of Black youth are
enrolled in school compared
to 77.1 percent of Latino
youth and 87.8 percent of
Asian youth.
The percentage of students
with an Individualized
Education Program (IEP) — a
plan that lays out the
special education
instruction, support and
services a student with an
identified disability needs
to thrive in school — has
increased in the Sonoma
Valley Unified School
District.
While the gap between
neighborhoods with highest
and lowest life expectancy
has narrowed since the 2014
report, people living in the
highest-scoring
neighborhood, East Bennett
Valley, still live 8.7 years
longer than those in
lowest-scoring Roseland
neighborhoods.

The work is being led by
Health Action Together, an
independent public-private
nonprofit. Through an
equity-centered process,
communities most impacted by
inequities are identifying
their priorities and
recommended actions. This
shared Agenda for Action
will serve as a roadmap to
direct institutional,
political, philanthropic,
and community-based efforts,
investments, and resources
in Sonoma County.
