When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: With so much going on in this
world I thought I would do a
commentary for this show. I am
going to play some special music
and will be sharing some
thoughts on the cluster bombs
that President Biden is sending to Ukraine,
and I will look deeply into the Women’s Spaces
Pledge, what it means and why
embracing it is important
in today’s world.
The song I will be playing
at the musical break is For
The Children, sung by
Shanta Fuentes. A perfect song
because when we return, I am
going to do an educational and
thought- provoking commentary on
Cluster bombs which are banned
in over one hundred
countries.President Biden just
announced the US would send them
to Ukraine to use in their war
with Russia. I remember seeing
Princess Dianna walking through
the fields and seeing so many
children and adults who lost
limbs from stepping on one of
these dangerous weapons. This
song has a strong message.
For the Children
by Shanta Fuentes
Oh precious are the children
Special are the children
In God's eyes
Gifts from above
Please take care of the
children
Helpless and innocent
Children are the future
From the borderlines and all
around the world
They need to know their
voice is being heard
From the borderlines and all
around the world
They need to know they are
not alone
Crying out
Crying out yeah
Crying out
Crying out yeah
For the children
We don't have all the
answers
But silence is unacceptable
Nor turning of
A blind eye
No we can't ignore it
So open up your hearts
We need more compassion
Helping hands
Taking action now
From the borderlines and all
around the world
They need to know their
voice is being heard
From the borderlines and all
around the world
They need to know they are
not alone
Crying out
Crying out yeah
Crying out
Crying out yeah
For the children
Crying out
Crying out yeah
Crying out
Crying out yeah
For the children
So I dedicate this song
In hopes that it sheds light
on the issues
It's not about choosing
sides
It's about saving lives
Cause our children
They've been crying out
Crying out
Crying out yeah
Crying out
Crying out yeah
For the children
Crying out
Crying out yeah
Crying out
Crying out yeah
For the children
Cluster bombs campaign
offers lessons for voluntary
sector
Funding campaigns can effect
real change, says Samantha
Rennie
Dec. 2, 2008, Article in The
Guardian by Samantha Rennie
Excerpt:
The convention on cluster
munitions being signed today
(Dec. 2, 2008) in Oslo is
the most significant piece
of international
humanitarian law for a
decade. It marks a major
achievement for those
campaigning for years to ban
a horrific weapon with more
devastating effects on
people and livelihoods than
even landmines. The campaign
provides some interesting
lessons on how charitable
trusts and foundations can
help voluntary organisations
to shift government policy.
The Diana, Princess of Wales
Memorial Fund has supported
the campaign to ban cluster
munitions since 2003,
building on its previous
£11m investment in landmine
clearance and support to
survivors. But rather than
fund further service
provision, we sought
legislative change to ban
cluster munitions....
The convention on cluster
munitions is more than a
fitting legacy for Diana,
Princess of Wales. It might
inspire more independent
funders to try to change
policy and practice.

Princess of Wales Memorial

What are cluster bombs and
why are they controversial?
-- Biden administration
confirms it has approved
providing Ukraine with
weapons opposed by human
rights groups
Article in The Guardian, Fri
7 Jul 2023, by Léonie
Chao-Fong
Excerpt:
The US has confirmed it will
provide cluster munitions to
Ukraine, following calls
from human rights groups for
Kyiv and Moscow to stop
using the controversial
weapons.
What is a cluster bomb?
A cluster bomb is a weapon
that breaks apart in the air
and releases multiple
explosive submunitions or
“bomblets” across a wide
area. They can be delivered
by planes, artillery and
missiles, according to the
International Committee of
the Red Cross (ICRC).
How dangerous are they?
The bomblets are designed to
detonate on hitting the
ground and anyone in that
area is very likely to be
killed or seriously injured.
Beyond the initial damage
caused by the munitions upon
impact, many bomblets fail
to detonate immediately. Up
to 40% of bomblets have
failed to explode in some
recent conflicts, according
to the ICRC.
As a result, cluster bombs,
like landmines, pose a risk
to civilians long after
their use. Unexploded
ordinance from cluster bombs
can kill and maim people
years or even decades after
the munitions were fired.
Human rights groups say that
the use of cluster bombs in
populated areas is a
violation of international
humanitarian law because
they cause indiscriminate
destruction. Sixty percent
of cluster bomb casualties
are people injured while
undertaking everyday
activities, according to
Reuters. One third of all
recorded cluster munitions
casualties are children.
More than 120 countries have
signed the Convention on
Cluster Munitions, which
prohibits the use,
production, transfer and
stockpiling of the weapons.
Russia, Ukraine and the US
have all declined to sign
the treaty. Since the
adoption of the convention
in 2008, 99% of global
stockpiles have been
destroyed, according to the
Cluster Munition
Coalition....
The song I will be playing
during the musical break is
For the Mothers, sung by
Betsey Rose and the Women’song
Chorus. It is so sad when you
think of the cluster bombs and
what havoc they cause for women
and children. When will humanity
evolve to be able to have peace
on earth?
For the last segment I want to
talk about the Women’s Spaces
Pledge that we do the last
Monday of the month, and it is
behind my business card. For me
nothing is truly going to change
if women do not stand up in the
name of the children they bring
forward. I believe if that does
not happen, we may lose many of
the freedoms we fought so hard
to win. Nothing was given to us,
and it is important to remember
that.
The song I will be playing for
the musical break is The
Galaxy Song, sung by Clint
Black, an amazing song. A shout
out to my friend Marie Johnson
who turned me on to the song. It
lets us know we live in a
mystery.
