When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Originally, I was going to
interview Molly Murphy
MacGregor, but we had technical
difficulty with the phone, so we
are postponing that interview
until next week. I will share
some facts about her
organization since it is
relevant to this month of March.
In 1980, the National Women’s
History Project (NWHP) was
founded in Santa Rosa,
California by Molly Murphy
MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter,
Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett and
Bette Morgan to broadcast
women’s historical achievements.
The NWHP started by leading a
coalition that successfully
lobbied Congress to designate
March as National
Women’s History Month,
now celebrated across the land.
Today, the NWHP, whose name was
changed to the National Women’s
History Alliance (NWHA) is known
nationally as the only
clearinghouse providing
information and training in
multicultural women’s history
for educators, community
organizations, and parents-for
anyone wanting to expand their
understanding of women
contributions to U. S. history.
I will be playing some songs for
Women's History Month and I will
recite a poem of mine, More
than My Hair:
I have come to declare I am
aware that I am more then my
hair.
A simple statement but
listen,
I have lived for decades
obsessed by my do.
I thought that hearing the
words,
"I Love You," "I Want You,"
"I need you,"
"You're beautiful," were all
connected to my hair.
From hairdresser to
hairdresser I would go,
Hoping to look good and make
a good show.
Then a special man would
know,
I am beautiful enough and
worthy enough
To ask for a date, to ask
for a kiss.
All they had to see was the
beauty in my hair.
At a workshop, sighing in
the mirror, eyes
questioning,
"What am I to do? I left my
gel at home!"
"Where's that brush? The
special one,
That makes waves and my hair
stand up tall."
It's been tough. It's been
rough.
"No more," I declare, "for I
am more than my hair.
I am that I am, and what I
am is grand."
Our history is our strength. Check out important dates to remember in herstory at the
National Women's History Alliance,, where the date descriptions
were sourced unless otherwise indicated.
