When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: Today
is Labor Day and
joining me in the studio is Lisa
Maldonado, Labor Representative
for the California Nurses
Association. Lisa has an
extensive background in labor
relations and union organizing
and we will be talking about the
history of Labor Day and her
involvement in labor relations.
She will be joined by Caroline
Banuelos, a member of the CSEIU
union and a member of the Board
of Trustees of Santa Rosa Junior
College.
Labor Day is a federal
holiday in the United States
celebrated on the first
Monday in September to honor
and recognize the American
labor movement and the works
and contributions of
laborers to the development
and achievements of the
United States. The three-day
weekend it falls on is
called Labor Day Weekend. By
the time it became an
official federal holiday in
1894, thirty states in the
U.S. officially celebrated
Labor Day.

Special Happy Birthday to my
beautiful Great Granddaughter
Satori Trinity Jensen who turns
six on September 6. I can hardly
believe six years have passed
and here she is playing soccer
and in kindergarten. I am
grateful to have lived long
enough to be a Great Grandmother.
2.
Our
first
Guest Ana Salgado
shares her journey from Oaxaca,
in southern Mexico, to El Norte,
the USA. She saved up some money
to make the long trip to a new
country, she hoped to call her
own. However the road to
citizenship is complicated by
our Immigration Laws that are
overdue for reform. Therefore,
Ana joined the march and rally
in Washington, DC last month to
lobby our representatives in the
House and Senate for immigration
reform, sharing their personal
stories with the elected
officials.
About our Guest: Ana
Salgaldo is produces
the program
Compartiendo y Aprendiendo
(Sharing and Learning) at Radio
KBBF. Ana is originally from
Oaxaca, Mexico.
Ana Salgaldo is featured

3. Our Second
Guests, Lisa Maldonado and
Caroline Banuelos,
share their paths to union and
communtiy activism. Both mention
the mentoring of their
grandmothers and their
ancestors. They discussed the
significance of unions and labor
movements. Caroline proudly wore
a shirt emphasizing her
membership in the Sonoma State
University employee Union SEIU.
Lisa and Caroline shared
personal stories about how
unions impacted their lives and
families, emphasizing their role
in providing crucial benefits
and protections.
Carolyn highlighted her father’s
dedication to his union, even in
his retirement, and the ongoing
benefits he receives from it.
She also mentioned efforts to
unionize student workers at
Sonoma State University to
address wage disparities. Lisa
reflected on her own background
in labor activism, sharing
experiences from her family and
the transformation it brought to
her own understanding of
collective action.
The discussion touched on the
resurgence of union support in
America, attributed to growing
dissatisfaction with income
inequality and poor working
conditions. Lisa and Caroline
pointed out that young workers,
particularly in industries like
fast food and retail, are
driving this movement. They also
criticized misconceptions about
unions being linked to
socialism, arguing instead that
they represent a commitment to
fair treatment and human rights.
Elaine emphasized the importance
of Labor Day in recognizing the
contributions of workers and
unions to improved working
conditions and benefits. The
interview concluded with a call
to action to vote and support
union efforts, affirming the
ongoing relevance and impact of
labor movements in advocating
for workers' rights.
