When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: I
have a special guest for this
show, joining me on the phone
from Washington DC will be
Jennifer Tucker, Senior Adviser
for Strategic Partnerships and
Engagement ERA Coalition Fund
for Women Equality (FFWE).
According to the
website of The Fund for
Women’s Equality, FFWE is a
national organization that
promotes sex equality in the
United States. We seek bold
change and are helping lead a
community and political movement
for Constitutional recognition.
We increase public understanding
of the need for codifying the
equal treatment of people on the
basis of sex in the
Constitution, and the need to
end sex inequality in all its
forms. We are a sister
organization to the ERA
Coalition, which works for the
passage and ratification of the
Equal Rights Amendment and
broader Constitutional equality.
Today is the last show of the
month and time for the Women's
Spaces Pledge.
Our first break will be feature
a description of Women's
Equality Day as presented by
Time Magazine in a YouTube
video.
2.
Our
Guest Jennifer Tucker
begins by sharing her long
journey
of activism, which
started with the implementation
of Title IX in the 1970s. Over
the years, her work has spanned
multiple issues, including
violence against women,
reproductive rights, economic
opportunity, and the broader
goal of ensuring equal treatment
and opportunities for women and
girls. Jennifer highlights the
enduring struggle for equality,
noting that while progress has
been made, fundamental
challenges remain, such as the
lack of the Equal Rights
Amendment (ERA) in the U.S.
Constitution.
The interview touches on
Jennifer's inspirations,
particularly her mother, who,
despite not identifying as a
feminist, instilled in her a
strong sense of justice and
equality. Jennifer also recounts
her experience working with
Shirley Chisholm and being
involved in the formation of the
National Political Congress of
Black Women, emphasizing the
importance of women supporting
each other and standing up for
their rights.
The conversation shifts to the
Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and
its significance. Jennifer
explains that the ERA, which has
been ratified by the necessary
number of states, still faces
legal and political hurdles. It
is important to vote up and down
the ballot, as it will take a
resolution of Congress to
approve the Equal Rights
Amendment. She stresses that
having the ERA in the
Constitution would strengthen
legal protections against gender
discrimination.
Jennifer also discusses the
excitement and hope she feels
after attending the Democratic
National Convention and seeing
women like Kamala Harris in
positions of power, noting that
Harris's experience and
readiness make her a strong
leader. She concludes by urging
women to be active in the
political process, to vote and
encourage others to vote, and to
hold their representatives
accountable for supporting the
Equal Rights Amendment and
other issues critical to women's
rights.
About our Guest: Jennifer
Tucker, M.A., has
dedicated her career to
advancing human rights for women
and vulnerable populations.
Recently, she was Vice President
at the Center for Women Policy
Studies, where she played a key
role in developing the Foreign
Policy Institute for State
Legislators and the Global
Power® program.
Tucker led initiatives
addressing women's education,
employment, economic, and family
roles, and directed the National
Program on Girls and Violence,
which explored girls'
involvement in violence and its
causes.
Before joining the Center in
1990, Tucker directed the
Effective Management of
Technology Project at the
Council of the Great City
Schools, assisting urban
educators with technology-based
programs. As a senior program
associate with PEER of the NOW
Legal Defense and Education
Fund, she contributed to the
first study on Title IX
enforcement, published as
Stalled at the Start. She is now
Senior Advisor for the ERA Fund
for Women's Equality (FFWE) and
recently attended the Democratic
National Convention.
