When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: I
have a special guest for this
morning. Jodie Evans,
co-founder, and board member of
CODEPINK, has been a peace,
environmental, women's rights,
and social justice activist for
fifty years. Jodie will be
talking about her recent book,
The Local Peace Economy, which
will cover local peace economy
strategies. She will also share
her experiences and insights
about her visits to Gaza in
Palestine.
CODEPINK is a feminist
grassroots organization
working to end U.S. warfare
and imperialism, support
peace and human rights
initiatives, and redirect
resources into healthcare,
education, green jobs, and
other life-affirming*
programs. Join us!
Life-affirming programs are
investments in social
programs that uplift human
dignity instead of tearing
it down. We believe
universal health care must
include the right to an
abortion, access to
education must not be
determined by income
bracket, and housing is a
human right.
2.
Our
Guest, Jodie Evans,
recounts her long history of
peace activism, starting in the
1960s, including protests
against wars like the 1991 Iraq
War. She was driven by disbelief
at the U.S. invasion, justified
by false claims of weapons of
mass destruction. Jodie connects
U.S. foreign wars to domestic
violence, arguing that both harm
marginalized communities,
costing human lives and societal
well-being. She reflects on her
protests, like a banner drop at
the White House during the Iraq
War, alongside activists Dianne
Wilson and Starhawk, to
challenge the media's neglect of
peaceful protests and the
system’s silencing tactics.
Jodie emphasizes the vital role
of women in activism, noting
that solidarity fosters courage.
She highlights Code Pink, the
anti-war organization she
co-founded, which offers women
resources, solidarity, and
creative means of protesting
militarization. A significant
focus of Code Pink is opposing
Israeli occupation in Palestine,
with Jodie recounting her
personal experiences visiting
Gaza and witnessing destruction,
describing the situation as
apartheid and genocide.
Shifting to the broader picture,
Jodie discusses the importance
of moving away from the
destructive "war economy" driven
by profit, technology, and
propaganda. Instead, she
advocates for building a "peace
economy" rooted in ancient and
indigenous traditions of giving,
sharing, and community care.
This shift requires individual
and collective efforts to reject
the war economy and foster
relationships that nourish life.
Jodie highlights her success in
moving nearly $2 billion into
peace economy projects, mostly
led by Black and Indigenous
communities, and emphasizes that
building local peace economies
is essential for tackling global
challenges like inequality,
climate change, and AI, which
she calls "patriarchy on
steroids."
About our Guest: Jodie
Evans, co-founder of
CODEPINK and 826LA, is a
seasoned activist with a focus
on peace, environmental, and
social justice. Over fifty
years, she has championed
peaceful conflict resolution and
local peace economies through
war divestment. Evans has served
on boards including the
Rainforest Action Network and
the Institute of Policy Studies
and is a Lifetime Director at
the Hereditary Disease
Foundation. A regenerative
farmer, mother, and grandmother,
she co-edited influential books
such as “Twilight of Empire” and
“Stop the Next War Now.” Evans
also supports local agriculture,
contributes to the World
Festival of Sacred Music.

September 9, 1850 -
California Admission
Day
California Admission Day is
observed on September 9 each
year. It commemorates the
day California was admitted
into the Union as the 31st
state in 1850 after it was
ceded to the United States
by Mexico in 1848.
California became one of the
few states to become a state
without first being an
organized territory.
California Admission Day is
not a federal holiday.
Rather, it’s a local
observance in the state,
which implies that
businesses, schools, and
government offices remain
open. In times gone by it
was celebrated with great
pomp and ceremony with
parades and pageantry.
Though low-key now, the day
still marks an important
part of Californian history.
1850.
September 8, 1859 (1918) – Mary
M. Kimball Kehew, union
organizer, co-founder of the
Union for Industrial Progress
(1892), first president of the
National Women’s Trade Union
League (1903).
September 8, 1945 (1995) –
Esther Rome, with thirteen other
women, created the Boston
Women’s Health Book Collective,
the basis for the groundbreaking
health manual Our Bodies,
Ourselves, which provided
accurate information on women’s
health.
September 10, 1890 (1980) – Rose
Norwood, powerful speaker and
labor organizer from Kiev,
Ukraine, organized the Boston
Women’s Trade Union (WTUL), led
strikes, organized laundry
workers, and served on the
advisory board of the NAACP.
