When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by
our Host, Elaine B. Holtz: Joining
me in the studio today is Dr.
Raquell Holmes. Dr. Holmes is a
computational cell biologist and
a pioneer in building inclusive,
developmental science
communities with improvisation.
Dr. Holmes is joining me today
to talk about the Freedom
Festival that takes place from
Juneteenth 19 which is June 19
thru Independence Day (July
4th).
The Freedom Festival Events will
be offered “from California to
the New York Island”—in-person
and online via Zoom all year
round. These will include
conversations about what freedom
means to us, about justice and
liberty, about Black activists
and artists across history.
There will be opportunities to
play, and to enjoy music and
games. You might be wondering
exactly what the Freedom
Festival is all about. Well,
that is what we will learn via
this first of three interviews.
Since Valentine's Day was on
Friday, as is our tradition for
5 years Ken and I will read my
Friends and Lovers poem in the
beginning of the show.
2.
Friends and Lovers-
poem of Elaine B. Holtz, who
reads it with her partner Ken
Norton.
3. Our
Guest Dr. Raquell Holmes, one of the co-creators of The Freedom Festival,
shares how it started after
George Floyd's murder. She saw
the need for uncomfortable
conversations about race and
class to occur in a safe
space. Juneteenth becoming a
national holiday inspired Dr.
Holmes to celebrate freedom and
independence, and as a national
holiday it attracts inquiry. The
festival invites everyone to
share their stories of freedom
and celebrate together.
Raquell invites people to create
events during the festival, like
workshops, art exhibits, and
conversations. These events are
curated at the Freedom Festivbal
USA
website and encourage
participation.
Working with
Dr. Lenora Fulani
influenced her to have the
confidence to create
opportunities for people to come
together.
People can get involved by
visiting
freedomfestivalusa.org ,
attend meetings, volunteer, or
donate. Everyone can contribute
to the festival in their own
way, all year round. From
Juneteenth to July 4th we have
16 days to explore and celebrate
freedom and independence,
leading from emancipation to
Independence Day.
About our Guest:
Dr. Raquell Holmes is
a computational cell biologist
pioneering the use of
improvisational performance to
foster inclusive science
communities. She earned her
Ph.D. from Tufts Sackler School
of Biomedicine, completed
postdoctoral training at Harvard
Medical School, and held
positions at Boston University
and the University of
Connecticut Health Center.
Author of Cell Biologist's Guide
to Modeling and Bioinformatics,
she creates multi-racial,
collaborative environments for
scientists, engineers, and
students.
A founding organizer of the
Richard Tapia Celebration of
Diversity in Computing and lead
organizer of the SC-conferences’
Broader Engagement program, Dr.
Holmes trained at the East Side
Institute in social
therapeutics. She founded
Improvscience, offering
leadership training that
enhances communication and
collaboration. She has coached
over three thousand
professionals, built a STEAM*
program for underserved
communities, and chaired the
Cultivating Ensembles
conference.
Inspired by Opal Lee's dream,
last year Dr. Holmes and
volunteers initiated
Freedom Festival USA,
connecting Juneteenth with July
4th to symbolize true freedom
for all.

dialogue, and critical
thinking.

history alive. Shout out to
Co-Founder and Retiring
Executive Director, Molly
McGregor who will be on the show
when we celebrate Women’s
History Month in March for
making the fabulous list of
Women in History where I get
most of the info I present in
this Herstory segment.
Herstory Events:
February 17, 1870 – Esther
Hobart Morris in Wyoming became
the first American woman Justice
of the Peace.
Herstory Birthdays:
February 18, 1931 – Toni
Morrison, Pulitzer Prize winning
novelist, first African-American
to win the Nobel Prize for
Literature (1993).
February 19, 1875 (1957) –
Margaret Foley, labor organizer,
suffragist, and social worker,
she was an out-spoken suffrage
activist who would loudly
confront anti-suffrage speakers,
made a solo balloon flight over
Lawrence, Massachusetts, tossing
suffrage literature from the
basket (1910).
February 20, 1805 (1879) –
Angelina Grimké, abolitionist,
joined the Philadelphia Female
Anti-Slavery Society in 1835 and
addressed “mixed” audiences in
1837, wrote An Appeal to the
Christian Women of the South
criticizing slavery in 1836,
after which a price was placed
on her head should she return to
South Carolina.
----
Our guest, Dr. Racquel Holmes
would like us to remember Dr.
Leonora Fusani:
Dr. Lenora
Fulani (1950-)
ran for president in 1988 and
1992, becoming the first woman
and first African American on
the ballot in all 50 states.
Raised in a working-class
Philadelphia family, she pursued
psychology to help her
community. Seeing systemic
failures, she sought new
solutions, especially after
emergency services neglected
Black communities, leading to
family tragedy. She founded
youth programs, co-organized a
multiracial, women-led political
party, and later focused on
independent voters. Her activism
centered on uniting people
across differences to create
change, emphasizing grassroots
organizing to build a system
that truly serves all
communities.
