When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: I
have one guest this morning.
Joining me on the phone will be
MaDona Feather Cruz. Madonna was
on the show last week with her
daughter Rayna Cruz. November is
Native American Heritage month
and on November 29th, the day
after Thanksgiving was Native
American Heritage Day This year
as she has done since a baby,
Madonna participated in the
Alcatraz Occupation with Rayna.
She will be sharing her
experience of this very
spiritual event and what she
hopes people walk away with
after participating. and we
talked about Indigenous Peoples
Day. This was the 57th annual
gathering with the first one
happening in 1977.
During this time, I always like
to honor one of the beginning
organizers of this important
event, John Trudell. I found
this quote of his and it
described exactly how I feel
these days, From John Trudell,
“I am just a human being trying
to make it in a world that is
rapidly losing its understanding
of being human.”
With so much going on in this
world I thought I would do a
commentary for this show after
the interview with Madonna. I am
going to play some special music
and will be sharing some
thoughts on what is going on in
today’s world from my
perspective.
2.
Our
Guest, MaDonna Feather Cruz,
joins us report on the recent
Alcatraz Sunrise Ceremony on
Thanksgiving morning, a
long-standing annual Native
American gathering commemorating
the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz
Island by the Red Power
movement. Madonna, a legacy
native deeply involved in
preserving cultural traditions,
discusses the event’s
significance, historical
context, and their personal
connection to the American
Indian Movement. She share how
the ceremony began in 1975 to
honor the Alcatraz protest,
emphasizing its continued
relevance in highlighting
indigenous resilience and unity.
The event attracts a diverse
audience, including both Native
and non-Native attendees from
around the world. MaDonna
describes the early morning
ferry ride to Alcatraz,
characterized by traditional
drumming, singing, and a sense
of community. Once on the
island, attendees participate in
various ceremonies, including
dances by Native groups, songs,
speeches from indigenous
leaders, and solidarity
expressions from other
marginalized communities. A
poignant moment involves reading
a letter from Leonard Peltier, a
Native American activist and
political prisoner.
MaDonna reflects on the
ceremony's purpose: affirming
that indigenous peoples and
cultures persist despite
historical and ongoing
challenges. She recounts youth
reactions to the event, noting
how it fosters understanding and
appreciation among both Native
and non-Native attendees.
Concluding the discussion,
MaDonna Feather Cruz encourages
listeners to engage with
indigenous initiatives and
support cultural preservation,
expressing gratitude for the
platform to share their
experiences and insights.
