When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: I
have a very special guests this
morning. Joining me in the
studio is Jane Sorensen, band
leader and founder of the
Poyntlyss Sistars who will be
performing June 9th at the Hood
Mansion at Hood Regional Park in
Santa Rosa.
Also joining me in the studio
this morning is Amy Nykamp,
President of the Sonoma County
Chapter of the National
Organization for women (NOW) A
little trivia NOW Nationally
claims over 500,000 members,
women on the move.
Joining me in the studio, as well,
will be Celeste Austin – She is
an Activist in our community and
part of the Juneteenth Planning
Committee. Celest is in a
Woman-Loving-Woman relationship
with a wonderful woman, Linda
Franklin and I must say a very
special and dear Sista friend.
Both will be giving us a
firsthand report on the Pride
Parade that happened in Santa
Rosa on Sat. June 2 in downtown
Santa Rosa and some of their
issues and concerns. I was so
sorry I could not attend but we
at the station and Women’s
Spaces are proud of this event
and proud of Sonoma County and
the City of Santa Rosa for all
the support given for this
event. We all need to have PRIDE
in who we are.
Ken and I had a great short
vacation. We went up to the
Redwoods in Willits and it was a
vacation that was needed.
Special shout out to my Grand
Daughter-in-law Amber Jensen for
organizing this special time.
Happy Birthday to her mother
Lori Thompson, 60 years strong.
June 2 has been named National
Gun Violence Awareness Day and
June 2023 as National Gun
Violence Month. With mass
shootings increasing, we need to
lobby for more regulations of
those guns designed for warfare.

2. Our Guests Celeste
Austin and Amy Nykamp
discuss their impressions of the
Pride Parade in Santa Rosa that
occurred last Saturday, June 3.
Celeste, a black woman,
describes her coming out as a
lesbian in 1973, which resulted
in her leaving her home state of
Iowa and disapproving mother.
She would face discrimination on
two fronts, one due to her skin
and the other being a lesbian.
Amy, a white woman, is straight
and married, but she describes
having family members who came
out as gay. She came with a
contingent from the Episcopal
Church, and she observed other
churches, synagogues
represented. Celeste thought
this year's Pride Parade was the
largest in Sonoma County history
with many children present with
their parents and grandparents,
and she noted appearances of
Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA)
in a large black classic car and
Santa Rosa Mayor Natalie Rogers.
Amy, as President of the Sonoma
County Chapter of the National
Organization for Women (NOW)
noted that NOW encourages people
to fight for equity for all, and
has even adopted
Intersectionalism, the
observation that some people
like Celeste face more than one
right being violated. Celeste
stressed that justice does not
come overnight but with a long
hard struggle of the LGBTQ+
community. She is grateful to
stand on the shoulders of her
ancestors regarding black
rights, and on many other
advocates for LGBTQ+ rights.
Actions speak loud to who one
is. She quotes Angela Davis, who
said, “If they come for me in
the morning, they will come for
you in the night.”
About our Guest:
Celeste Austin
is a
community activist in Sonoma
County and a member of the
MLK/Juneteenth Committee.
About our Guest:Amy
Nykamp is the President of
the Sonoma County chapter of the
National Organization for Women. Amy Nykamp
works as an Adult Reference Librarian for the
Sonoma County Library. She also has a background in
working with children and teens and was part of the team
at the Sonoma County History and Genealogy Library and
helped with the production of the National Organization
for Women (NOW) Sonoma County Chapter’s 19th Amendment
Centennial 2020 Woman Suffrage calendar, which included
national and local California heroes. Amy is NOW
Sonoma's new President.
3. Our Guest Jane Sorenson
visits us as the bandleader of
The Poyntlyss Sistars
Rockin' Show Band to
announce a Peace Town fundraiser
they will be performing at the
venue Fridays at the
Hood this Friday, June
9. Jane loved to sing in church
choirs and in the school
glee club. A voice coach said
she had no talent at age 9, but
she continued to love singing.
She even attended some American
Bandstand shows and made a funny
observation of Ed McMahon, who
would check that the girls in
the audience had some noticeable
breasts to please TV viewers.
Her studies were in the medical
field, and she worked many years
for the Sonoma County Mental
Health Services. One day some
songs were playing over the
radio, and she started
harmonizing out loud, which
attracted other staff members to
chime in with their harmonies. A
male doctor quipped that they
sounded like the Pointless
Sisters, sarcastically referring
to the Pointer Sisters, with the
implication that there was no
point in singing. Jane took on
the title and with some spelling
changes it became the band name
of today. Most of the original
band members have passed away,
but Jane continues at age 79
with younger band members. As
the band leader she takes care
of the scripting tasks of each
singer and band instrument, as
well as all the booking, PR, and
administration. Check out her
show on Friday and the other
offerings on Fridays at the Hood
at the event links below.
