When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Joining me on the phone this
morning will be Christian Nunes
who is the President for the
National Organization for Women.
Christian will be joining me
from Washington DC. As the
grassroots arm of the women’s
movement, the National
Organization for Women is
dedicated to its multi-issue and
multi-strategy approach to
women’s rights and is the
largest organization of feminist
grassroots activists in the
United States. NOW has hundreds
of chapters and hundreds of
thousands of members and
activists in all fifty states
and the District of Columbia.
On April 27, 2023, via Zoom The
National Organization for Women
(NOW) presented, The
Feminist State of the Union.
We are now going to play an
interview that was done by our
guest Christian Nunes during the
event with former First Lady,
Hilary Rodham Clinton. The
interview is 19
minutes long.
----
Hillary Rodham Clinton in her
interview with Christian
Nunes
encouraged activism by taking
responsibility and joining up
with like-minded people in
groups, of which there are many
opportunities. She notes that in
achieving economic justice women
face the internal barriers of
low self-esteem exacerbated by
social media and the external
barriers such as pay differences
from those of men and lack of
day-care for mothers of
children. She feels that the
SCOTUS Dobbs Decision striking
down Row v. Wade will mobilize a
new generation of activists and
that the ERA fight must continue
with voting out the Republicans
obstructing its passage. With
all the opportunities don't
lapse into hopelessness. She is
glad the Biden/Harris candidacy
has been announced, as she feels
they have policies good for
women.

2.
Our Guest Christian Nunes
shares the influences on her
path to becoming the President
of the National Organization for
Women (NOW). She discusses with
our host Elaine the kernels of
the 2023 Feminist State of the
Union sponsored by NOW. Overall
the message was fight and not
back down, and acting
collectively is more powerful.
Women are encouraged to be aware
of the issues that speak deeply
to them and to look for groups
addressing those issue and
become involved. NOW has
embraced intersectionalism, that
recognizes that the different
rights sought by women dovetail
with those seeking racial
justice, gender justice, and
economic justice.
Christian encourages women to
join NOW through a local chapter
or via their website
https://now.org/ . NOW is
the largest feminist
organization in the nation, with
more than 500,000 contributing
members. NOW has more than 500
local and campus affiliates in
all 50 states and the District
of Columbia. These affiliates
include chapters and Campus
Action Networks. As a member a
woman has this encouragement and
clout to speak up for justice.
Elaine noted as a member of NOW
that she felt that encouragement
of the large organization of
like-minded feminists as she
spearheaded that effort for the
California NOW to publish a
statement in response to
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor
Greene's insulting remarks to
the President of the American
Federation of Teachers
discounting her motherhood role
as a partner to a lesbian with
an adopted child.
Christine Nunes concluded that
she hopeful that women of all
ages will take up or continue
the fight for victory, as they
recognize and are strengthened
standing on the shoulders of
women activists who came before
them.
About our Guest:
Christian Nunes, MBA,
MS, LCSW, became NOW President
in August 2020. She was
previously appointed Vice
President by the board in May
2019. As the second African
American president in the
organization’s history, the
youngest person of color, and
the youngest president in more
than 40 years, Nunes is leading
the organization through an
intersectional lens, bringing a
diverse coalition of grassroots
activists to work against
structural sexism and racism.
Christian is a former NOW board
member and committee chair, as
well as a licensed clinical
social worker, consultant, and
woman-minority business
owner. She is an active
community organizer and public
speaker, regularly featured at
events such as the March for
Black Women, Women’s March
Events, and rallies around the
country in support of the Equal
Rights Amendment and immigration
rights. Along with her activism
for mental health, Christian has
more than 20 years of experience
advocating for children’s and
