When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
We originally booked Sherry
Glaser, the theater artist,
author of Chickenary, but on
calling to bring her on via
telephone, there was a
difficulty to connect with her..
As I spontaneously started to
put my Plan B without a guest
into effect by reading my poem
More Than My Hair,
Holly Near called the studio
expecting to be interviewed.
Apparently, I mistakenly listed
her for another date. Somehow
the Goddess had a better Plan B
already arranged. For the music
we had originally planned to
play Buffy St. Marie's song
Magic is Afoot, and clearly
we felt it today, but we changed
the playlist as the show
progressed. So today's show
features an interview with our
guest Holly Near.
Save the date for the California
NOW Convention on August 10th in
Santa Rosa. See the
Announcements below for more
details.
2. Our
Guest, Holly Near,
a renowned singer, songwriter,
and activist, reflects on her
journey in music and activism.
She credits her initial
involvement in music to her
supportive family and early
experiences beginning when she
was 9 years old singing at
community events. After
attending UCLA, she entered the
entertainment industry, starring
in films and television.
However, she soon turned her
focus to music, founding her own
record company in 1972 to
produce songs that addressed
social issues, paving the way
for future artists like Melissa
Etheridge and Tracy Chapman.
Throughout her career, Near has
used her music to promote social
change, integrating ideas of
feminism, anti-war sentiments,
and LGBTQ+ rights into her work.
She highlights her experiences
traveling with Jane Fonda on the
FTA tour, which critiqued the
Vietnam War, as formative in her
development as an activist.
Near discusses the evolution of
women’s movements, noting how
initial resistance to feminist
and lesbian themes has
transformed over time. She
underscores the importance of
documenting personal histories
to ensure these stories are
remembered and valued. Near also
points to the significance of
music as a tool for inspiration,
education, and healing,
emphasizing its role in social
movements across generations.
She mentions her involvement in
diverse social justice causes,
from the anti-apartheid movement
to supporting Middle Eastern and
Latin American communities. Near
stresses the importance of
coalition work and connecting
various social justice issues,
urging activists to understand
the interconnectedness of their
efforts.
Near expresses admiration for
contemporary female artists like
Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, who
draw large audiences and promote
messages of love and solidarity.
She notes the ongoing efforts of
women in activism, acknowledging
both the challenges they face
and the inspiring resilience of
younger generations.
Holly Near concludes by
discussing her upcoming
projects, including a
performance at La Peña in
Berkeley and an ongoing book
project. She calls for
engagement in the upcoming
election, emphasizing the
importance of supporting a
competent administration despite
criticisms of the current
political candidates.
About our Guest:
Holly Near, with 50
years
of bold work, remains a powerful
voice for change. Her work is
loving, challenging, funny, and
thought-provoking, rooted in the
global community. As a singer
and peace ambassador, she
integrates world consciousness
with self-evaluation, always
sharing her experiences humbly
and boldly.
She discovered her voice early,
singing along with recordings of
great singers. After high
school, she briefly attended
UCLA before moving into film and
TV, appearing on shows like The
Partridge Family and in films
like Minnie and Moskowitz. She
performed in Hair on Broadway
but soon focused on full-time
singing, both solo and with her
sisters, collaborating with
artists such as Mercedes Sosa
and Ronnie Gilbert.
In her twenties, Near joined the
Free The Army Show and the
Indochina Peace Campaign,
learning about the
military-industrial complex and
global feminism. She immersed
herself in the feminist
movement, turning lessons on
sexism and homophobia into song.
Holly's songs often become
anthems. She wrote "It Could
Have Been Me" after the Kent
State shootings and "Singing For
Our Lives" following the
assassinations of Mayor George
Moscone and Supervisor Harvey
Milk. She also wrote "Hay Una
Mujer Desaparecida" about the
women who disappeared under
Chile's Pinochet dictatorship.
In 2019, Near launched "Because
of a Song," an online archive
documenting influential feminist
lesbian artists in Oakland,
California. She has received
numerous awards, including from
the ACLU and the National
Organization for Women (NOW), and has
been nominated for Grammys and
the Legends of Women’s Music
Award.- Photo
