When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Joining me in the studio today
is Dr. Raquell Holmes. Dr.
Holmes is a computational cell
biologist and a pioneer in
building inclusive,
developmental science
communities with improvisation.
Dr. Holmes is joining me today
to talk about the Freedom
Festival that happens from
Juneteenth (July 19 thru
Independence Day (July 4th) Also
our conversation will include on
information about Opal Lee who
walked and lobbied to make
Juneteenth a National Holiday.
In 2021 President Biden made
Opal Lee’s dream and made
Juneteenth a national holiday.
The Freedom Festival Events will
be offered “from California to
the New York Island”—in-person
and online. These will include
conversations about what freedom
means to us, about justice and
liberty, about Black activists
and artists across history.
There will be opportunities to
play, and to enjoy music and
games. You might be wondering
exactly what the Freedom
Festival is all about. Well,
that is what we will learn via
this interview.
See the
Announcements for a list of
ongoing protest gatherings for
peace in Sonoma County, which
Susan Lamont compiled for me.

2. Our
Guest, Dr. Raquell Holmes,
grew up in Roseland in Santa
Rosa, CA, She pursued her Ph.D.
in Biology at Harvard and Tufts.
She explains that her work
involves coaching, consulting,
and training individuals from
various professional
backgrounds, including CEOs and
managers. Her approach
emphasizes the importance of
seeing each other as people and
listening actively to foster
collaboration. This method draws
from improvisational techniques
that encourage play and personal
expression to achieve collective
goals. In 2010, she founded
Improv Science to integrate
improvisation into scientific
communities, aiming to improve
communication and collaboration
among scientists.
Holmes' passion for community
and grassroots organizing began
when she moved to the East Coast
for graduate school. She became
involved in a political forum
led by African American women,
promoting democracy and social
justice. This experience taught
her the power of performance and
community organizing, which she
later applied to youth
development programs in Boston.
Holmes shares how her upbringing
influenced her work. Her parents
supported her diverse interests,
from bookkeeping to playing
football, demonstrating the
value of encouragement and
support. She also highlights the
significance of Juneteenth and
its recognition as a national
holiday, championed by Opal Lee.
Juneteenth marks the
finalization of freedom from
chattel slavery, a unifying
celebration of independence for
all Americans.
Holmes discusses the
Freedom Festival, an
initiative she helped create to
celebrate and explore freedom
and independence. The festival
encourages people from diverse
backgrounds to share their
stories and engage in events
that highlight the joys and
challenges of freedom. The
grassroots nature of the
festival relies on community
involvement, with volunteers
hosting events and participating
in online activities. Holmes
shares examples of events
spurred from folks of different
cultures with their unique
stories of freedom.
The
Freedom Festival website
provides information on how to
get involved, donate, and
participate in various events.
Dr. Holmes emphasizes that the
festival is a collective effort,
driven by community support and
the shared goal of creating a
culture of freedom and
independence for everyone.
About our Guest:
Dr. Raquell Holmes is
a computational cell biologist
pioneering the use of
improvisational performance to
foster inclusive science
communities. She earned her
Ph.D. from Tufts Sackler School
of Biomedicine, completed
postdoctoral training at Harvard
Medical School, and held
positions at Boston University
and the University of
Connecticut Health Center.
Author of Cell Biologist's Guide
to Modeling and Bioinformatics,
she creates multi-racial,
collaborative environments for
scientists, engineers, and
students.
A founding organizer of the
Richard Tapia Celebration of
Diversity in Computing and lead
organizer of the SC-conferences’
Broader Engagement program, Dr.
Holmes trained at the East Side
Institute in social
therapeutics. She founded
Improvscience, offering
leadership training that
enhances communication and
collaboration. She has coached
over three thousand
professionals, built a STEAM*
program for underserved
communities, and chaired the
Cultivating Ensembles
conference.
Inspired by Opal Lee's dream,
last year Dr. Holmes and
volunteers initiated a
Freedom Festival,
connecting Juneteenth with July
4th to symbolize true freedom
for all.
