When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: I
have a special guest with me in
the studio this morning. Joining
me in the studio is Rebecca
Fein. Rebecca is the Executive
Director for
Verity, with the mission:
Verity is dedicated to
providing comprehensive and
compassionate support to
survivors of sexual assault,
rape, and human trafficking in
Sonoma County.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
was in April. So many things to
cover and was unable to do so in
April and my idea is better late
than never. The theme this year
is, “Together We Can Build
Connected Communities,” Sexual
violence affects every community
in this Nation, leaving millions
of Americans — our neighbors,
friends, colleagues, and loved
ones — scarred.
For many survivors, healing can
take years, and for some, the
pain never heals completely.
During National Sexual Assault
Awareness and Prevention Month,
organizations like Verity,
recommit to standing with
survivors, holding perpetrators
accountable, and bringing an end
to a culture that has allowed
sexual assault to occur for far
too long. I am looking forward
to this conversation.
This is if you can believe it
the last Monday of the Month and
we will be doing the Women’s
Spaces Pledge,
I have some special happy
birthdays to announce. On Friday
June 21 which was the Summer
Solstice and the full moon and
we celebrated activists Susan
Lamont’s birthday. She was born
on the 21st and when she was
born it was full. Special Happy
Birthday to activist Robin
Latham, an amazing woman and we
were able to share our
experiences when we were both
part of the Harmony Festival
that took place in Sonoma Co. A
big Happy Birthday to our
wonderful KBBF Board President,
Alicia Sanchez one of my
favorite people in this world.
The party took place at another
birthday woman, June Brashares
home. A shout out to her wonder
husband Woody Hastings for
arranging it to happen. It was
an amazing party and Ken and I
truly needed.
Special condolences to the
family of our dear friend
Timothy Osmer, a true man of the
earth, passed away on Friday
morning June 21. Special love
and hugs sent over the airways
to his beautiful partner and our
friend Nikki Dohn.

2. Our
Guest, Rebecca Fein,
Executive Director of
Verity, Sonoma County's sexual
assault prevention,
intervention, and healing center,
discusses her background,
Verity's services, and the
importance of storytelling in
healing from sexual trauma.
Rebecca joined Verity in 2023,
bringing over a decade of
nonprofit leadership experience.
She has a BA in sociology from
UC Davis and an MPH from
Columbia University.
Rebecca founded the
Powerful Voices Project,
a series of documentary films
sharing stories of resilience
from young women who have
experienced sexual trauma.
Rebecca recounts a
transformative experience with a
close friend, where sharing
their personal stories of sexual
assault led them to recognize
the power of storytelling in
healing. This realization
spurred Rebecca’s involvement
with Verity, where she began as
a crisis line counselor. The
crisis line, staffed by both
professionals and trained
volunteers, provides 24/7
support to survivors.
Verity offers comprehensive
services, including prevention
education in schools,
professional advocacy for
survivors seeking resources like
housing and legal aid, and
trauma-informed counseling.
Verity is co-located at the
Family Justice Center, which
consolidates multiple services
for survivors, making it easier
to access necessary support.
It’s administrative office is at
1311 West Steel Lane.
The organization's name evolved
from "Women Against Rape" to
"United Against Sexual Assault"
and finally to "Verity" to
create a more accessible and
less stigmatizing identity.
Recently, Verity updated its
tagline to "Sexual Assault
Prevention, Intervention, and
Healing" to clearly communicate
its mission.
Rebecca emphasizes the
importance of meeting survivors
where they are and supporting
their individual journeys
towards healing and justice. She
also highlights the critical
need for stable funding for
victim services, referencing the
Victims of Crime Act (VOCA)
funding, which fluctuates
significantly. While the State
of California has provided
temporary backfill funding,
long-term stability is needed to
ensure continued support for
vulnerable populations.
Overall, Rebecca's work and
Verity's mission underscore the
significance of compassionate,
safe spaces and comprehensive
support systems for survivors of
sexual assault.
About our Guest:
Rebecca Fein
is the executive
director of Verity,
Sonoma County's sexual assault
prevention, intervention, and
healing center. She
began her role at the
organization in 2023, bringing
10 years of nonprofit leadership
experience and a deep passion
for the mission of Verity.
Rebecca holds a bachelor's
degree in sociology from UC
Davis, and a master's in public
health from Columbia University.
Becky Fein is the founding
director of the Powerful
Voices Project, a
documentary film series that
tells stories of resilience,
hope, and recovery of people who
have experienced sexual trauma.
This interactive talk will
explore the power of
storytelling in service to
healing and changing the
conversation around sexual
assault and its survivors.

Herstory Events:
June 23, 1972 – Title IX of the
Education Amendments of 1972 is
signed by President Nixon, one
of the most important
legislation initiatives passed
for women and girls since women
won the vote in 1920. This
legislation guarantees equal
access and equal opportunity for
female and male students in
almost all aspects of our
educational systems.
Title IX is most famous for
its impact on expanding
opportunities for women and
girls in sports. In 1972,
there were just over 300,000
women and girls playing
college and high school
sports in the United States.
Female athletes received 2
percent of college athletic
budgets, while athletic
scholarships for women were
virtually nonexistent.
By 2012, the 40th
anniversary of Title IX’s
passage, the number of girls
participating in high school
sports nationwide had risen
tenfold, to more than three
million. More than 190,000
women were competing in
intercollegiate sports—six
times as many as in 1972. By
2016, one in every five
girls in the United States
played sports, according to
the Women’s Sports
Foundation. Before the
passage of Title IX, that
number had been one in
twenty-seven.
June 23, 1940 (November 12,
1994) – Wilma Rudolph, athlete,
first woman runner to win three
gold medals in a single
Olympics.
Wilma
Rudolph was an American
sprinter who overcame
childhood polio and went on
to become a
world-record-holding Olympic
champion and international
sports icon in track and
field following her
successes in the 1956 and
1960 Olympic Games. She was
the first American woman to
win three gold medals in
track and field during a
single Olympic Games.
