When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: Joining
me on the phone this morning
will be Dr. Harriet Fraad. Dr.
Fraad is a mental health
counselor and hypnotherapist in
practice in New York City. She
is a well published author and
writes about the pressures on
families and the economics of
the USA. She is also a regular
guest of Dr. Richard Wolff and
his show Economic Update on KBBF
89.1FM every Tuesday 11-12pm.
For this show we will be talking
about an interesting article
that Dr. Fraad sent me that I
thought would be worth talking
about. The article addresses
women in the workplace and is
titled: “Women’s Work Can No
Longer Be Taken for Granted,” by
Lonnie Sussman.
Special shout out to Nancy
Rogers and the Juneteenth
Committee. They held their 54th
Juneteenth celebration on Sat.
June 15 at MLK Jr. Park. It was
a tremendous success. A special
shout out to all those who made
this event possible. During the
celebration there were several
awards given out including three
scholarships to students
graduating high school and will
be attending college. I am so
proud to be part of this
festival. Freedom is the
Creator, the Great Mystery’s
gift to all of us.

2. Our
Guest, Dr. Harriet Fraad,
a founding mother of the women's
movement in New Haven, CT, since
1969, has been a fervent
feminist and socialist,
examining the interplay of
personal, political, and
economic life in the US. The
women's movement, inspired by
the civil rights movement and
anti-Vietnam War committees,
recognized the necessity of
fighting for women's equality to
uplift society as a whole.
Initially, the movement grew
swiftly, from five women in a
living room to large meetings,
driven by the urgency to address
systemic inequalities, wage
gaps, and the undervaluation of
women's work.
The Equal Rights Amendment
(ERA), proposed by Alice Paul in
1923, sought to ensure equal
rights for all, but true
equality remained elusive even
after women's suffrage in 1920.
The ERA's passage would
challenge discriminatory
practices, such as the Southern
Baptist Convention's insistence
on women's subordination.
Occupational segregation
relegates many women to
undervalued "pink collar" jobs
tied to caregiving roles,
leading to economic
disadvantages and a
disproportionate burden of
unpaid domestic labor.
The movement should have
emphasized changing gender roles
for both women and men,
advocating for men's emotional
freedom to prevent destructive
behaviors from suppressed
emotions. The goal of the
movement is to achieve equality
and liberation for both genders.
Abortion rights and
contraception remain contentious
due to declining birth rates and
resistance to immigration, with
some political factions aiming
to revert to traditional family
structures to boost population
growth. However, global trends
are moving away from these
norms.
For lasting change, women must
ally with other movements, such
as unions, to harness the power
of collective action and
solidarity. The growing union
movement exemplifies the
strength of unity in striving
for equality and justice for
all.

June 17, 1873 – Susan B.

illegally voting in Rochester,

June 19, 1865, Juneteenth
National Independence Day, the
day of the final order to
enforcement of the Emancipation
Proclamation in Texas at the end
of the American Civil War.
Juneteenth became a state
holiday in Texas in 1980, and a
few other states subsequently
followed suit. In 2021
Juneteenth was made a federal
holiday, in part because of the
actions of activist Opal Lee to
raise awareness.
Opal Lee (born October 7,
1926) is an
American
retired teacher, counselor,
and activist in the movement
to make Juneteenth a
federally recognized
holiday. She is often
described as the
"grandmother of Juneteenth".
On June 17, 2021, President
Joe Biden signed Senate Bill
S. 475, making Juneteenth
the eleventh federal
holiday. Then, in 2024,
Biden awarded Lee the
Presidential Medal of
Freedom, the Nation's
highest civilian honor.
Wednesday, June 19, 2024,
Juneteenth, Federal Holiday
Juneteenth is the oldest
known celebration
commemorating the ending of
slavery in the United
States. Dating back to 1865,
it was on June 19th that the
Union soldiers, led by Major
General Gordon Granger,
landed at Galveston, Texas
with news that the war had
ended and that the enslaved
were now free. This was two
and a half years after
President Lincoln’s
Emancipation Proclamation -
which had become official
January 1, 1863. The
Emancipation Proclamation
had little impact on the
Texans due to the minimal
number of Union troops to
enforce the new Executive
Order. However, with the
surrender of General Lee in
April of 1865, and the
arrival of General Granger’s
regiment, the forces were
finally strong enough to
influence and overcome the
resistance.
