When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
With so much going on in this
world I thought I would do a
commentary for this show. I am
going to play some special music
and will be sharing some
thoughts on what is going on in
today’s world from my
perspective.
We usually do the Women’s Spaces
Pledge the last show of the
Month. Well, last month the
schedule was so tight I could
not do it, so I thought for
today’s show we would do a bit
of catch up and even go a little
in depth about the Pledge and
its meaning and purpose as I see
it. Today we celebrate Step Into
The Spot Light Day, which is
what the pledge is all about, to
support women to start shining
their lights and having the
courage to speak out against
injustice and war. To me that
means looking at our fears
around speaking out and stepping
up and speaking out.
The song I will be playing at
the musical break is For We
Are Singing for our Lives,
sung by Holly Near. As I
mentioned at the beginning of
the show for this program, I am
taking time to share some of the
thoughts and feelings I have
been having over the past
several weeks. This song is so
appropriate for these times as
many of us are standing up and
in countries far and near women
are singing for their lives. We
women in the USA are fighting
for our lives, and we learned a
big lesson, we must keep our eye
on the prize even when we won
it. I never believed it would
happen but slowly but surely it
did.
I have a special save the date
for all my listeners:
The National Organization for
Women is having their California
conference on August 10th.
The theme is "Moving
Forward and Igniting Change."
I am so excited and yes, I have
a little to do with this.
The NOW California
Conference will be right here in
Sonoma County at the
Presbyterian Church of the Roses.
We need Volunteers to help in
the days leading up to and
including the conference.
Contact NOW Sonoma County at
info@nowsonoma.org .
It is so important currently
that women gather and stand
together for Justice and Peace.
I will be at the conference and
will have some special cards
with the Women’s Spaces
Pledge. So, mark your
calendars, August 10th. More
information will be provided as
we get closer to the event.
You know I talk about the
importance of self esteem and
speaking out and I wanted to
share a song that continues to
remind me of how important it is
to pay attention and when you
see a wrong, speak out. Often,
it’s the first ones that do and
others follow.
You can do that in many ways,
educate yourself and share
information with friends and
family, write a letter to the
editor, support programs that
support your values via
volunteering or cash donations.
Do an act of kindness when the
opportunity presents itself.
These are ways that make a
community strong in my mind.
Well, the next song I will play
is sung by Ellen Bukstel and it
is called, By My Silence.
The song is based on the poem
written by Pastor Martin
Niemoeller.
First they came for the
socialists, and I did not speak
out—because I was not a
socialist.
Then they came for the trade
unionists, and I did not speak
out—because I was not a trade
unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and
I did not speak out—because I
was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there
was no one left to speak for me.
—Martin Niemöller
The quotation expresses
Niemöller’s belief that
Germans had been complicit
through their silence in the
Nazi imprisonment,
persecution, and murder of
millions of people. He felt
this was especially true of
the leaders of the
Protestant churches, which
were made up of Lutheran,
Reformed, and United
traditions.
We are going to take another
break and end the show with this
reading: Still I Rise,
read and written by Maya
Angelou, one of my favorite
human beings that landed on this
planet. She was so wise, and I
love listening to her. I wish I
knew her and interviewed her.
Well, this is my way of keeping
her alive.
Still I Rise
BY MAYA ANGELOU
You may write me down in
history
With your bitter, twisted
lies,
You may trod me in the very
dirt
But still, like dust, I'll
rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with
gloom?
’Cause I walk like I've got
oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like
suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing
high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me
broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like
teardrops,
Weakened by my soulful
cries?
Does my haughtiness offend
you?
Don't you take it awful hard
’Cause I laugh like I've got
gold mines
Diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your
words,
You may cut me with your
eyes,
You may kill me with your
hatefulness,
But still, like air, I’ll
rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got
diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s
shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted
in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping
and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear
in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of
terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that’s
wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my
ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope
of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
