When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
I have a special guest this
morning. Joining me on the phone
is Starhawk. Starhawk is
Starhawk is an author, activist,
permaculture designer and
teacher, and a prominent voice
in modern earth-based
spirituality and ecofeminism.
She is the author or co-author
of thirteen books, including
The Spiral Dance: A Rebirth of
the Ancient Religion of the
Great Goddess and the
ecotopian novel The Fifth
Sacred Thing,
and its sequel City of Refuge.
Today is an incredibly special
day, today is the day we
celebrate Earth Day. Earth Day
is an annual event on April 22
to demonstrate support for
environmental protection.
First
held on April 22, 1970, it
now includes a wide range of
events coordinated globally
by EARTHDAY.ORG (formerly
Earth Day Network)[1]
including 1 billion people
in more than 193
countries.[2][1][3] The
official theme for 2024 is
"Planet vs. Plastics." 2025
will be the 55th
anniversary of Earth Day.
Earth Day honors Rachel Carson
today, a woman who changed
America and influenced the
environmental movement with her
revolutionary book, Silent
Spring.
Silent Spring is an
environmental science book by
Rachel Carson. The book was
published on September 27, 1962,
documenting the adverse
environmental effects caused by
the indiscriminate use of
pesticides.
Teo months prior to the celebration of
Earth Day, on February 20, 1970,
54 years ago, a group of students
at San Jose State University
purchased and buried a new 1970
Ford maverick on the campus
cafeteria building front lawn in
San Jose CA the event was part
of a weeklong survival fair at
the school focusing attention on
environmental problems.
As a part of the History is our
Strength segment of the show, I
have invited Ken to tell the
story of what happened that day
at San Jose State.
----
2. Ken
Norton: As an
engineering student at San Jose
State College in 1970, Ken
Norton participated in the
Survival Faire, driven by
memories of Los Angeles smog and
Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring."
He co-founded the Engineers for
Awareness Club, advocating
environmental protection amid
the Vietnam War era's
questioning of authority.
Norton's group symbolically
buried a car to protest gasoline
engine pollution, attracting
attention from publications like
the New York Times and the San
Francisco Chronicle. This event,
preceding Earth Day, elevated
national awareness of
environmental issues, reflecting
a generational shift towards
activism and critical thinking.
----
After our music break I will be
interviewing our guest Starhawk,
who is an author, activist,
permaculture designer and
teacher, and a prominent voice
in modern earth-based
spirituality and ecofeminism.
----
3. Our Guest
Starhawk: Starhawk delves
into various topics, including
environmental activism,
feminism, spirituality, and the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
She discusses ecofeminism,
highlighting the
inter-connectedness of struggles
for gender equality,
environmental protection, and
social justice. She emphasizes
the need to confront systemic
power imbalances and advocates
for collective liberation.
Regarding her work, Starhawk
mentions her book The
Empowerment Manual, which
offers guidance for
collaborative groups on
communication and conflict
resolution. She discusses
upcoming courses and workshops
on permaculture design and
activism, encouraging people to
engage in earth-healing
activities.
Regarding the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
Starhawk shares her experiences
and reflections, stressing the
importance of addressing
difficult conversations and
breaking down barriers to
understanding and
reconciliation. She underscores
the need for compassion, active
listening, and constructive
dialogue to promote justice and
peace.
Overall, the interview showcases
Starhawk's commitment to social
and environmental activism,
offering insights and resources
for individuals and groups
striving to create positive
change in the world.

Starhawk is an author,
