When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: I
have a special guest this
morning. Joining me in the
studio is Dr. Andrea
Hall-Miller, PhD, RN, MA, and
freelance writer. Andrea is also
the Director of Community
Engagement for the North Bay
Black Chamber of Commerce. We
will be talking about her
journey from nurse to author.
For this segment she will join
me in commenting on an event we
both attended, the Diversity
Business Awards, and I will be
playing two songs that we will
be discussing. I know this is
going to be a lively and
informative interview. I
intended to have a guest once a
month that enters into dialogue
with me. Andrea is willing to be
the first one in this special
segment.
Happy Birthday to my wonderful
grandson, Ryan Jensen. This is
the year of the Dragon, and he
is an Earth Dragon. Perfect
description of him, he is a man
of the Earth, a great son,
grandson, husband, father, and
teacher. I am enormously proud
of him.
A Reminder:
Most people have gotten their
vote by mail ballots. Very
important you vote. Suggestion:
Ken and I always vote a few days
before the deadline, which is
Election Day Nov. 5th, and drop
them off at the Voter
Registration office. Voting is a
sacred ritual. It is the
foundation of a Democracy. When
you do not vote you are saying
whatever will be will be.
Often when I hear folks complain
about our country, I ask them,
“Did you vote. If they say no
and give some sort of excuse, I
let them know I am not
interested in listening to them.
On November 4th, our guest will
be Deva Marie Proto. Deva was
elected by voters in 2018 to
serve as Sonoma County’s
Clerk-Recorder-Assessor and
Registrar of Voters and she will
be giving us valuable
information voting on our
November 4th show,the day before
Election Day.
2.
Our
Guest, Dr. Andrea Hall,
joins our host Elaine B. Holtz
in conversation about the
feelings that arose on hearing
the song The House I
Live In,
written in 1943 during WWII, and
made famous in a film of that
name with the song sung by Frank
Sinatra. Dr. Andrea Hall,
a woman of color, describes how
the song evokes mixed feelings.
While she appreciates its
positive imagery of America, her
personal experiences as a Black
woman reveal a contrasting
reality. She shares how her
son-in-law, who refuses to
hyphenate his identity as
"African American," insists on
being simply "American" never
having been to Africa. This
discussion echoes the
complexities of being Black in
America—loving the country but
also mistrusting it due to
historical and ongoing racial
injustices.
Elaine, whose heritage is
Jewish, adds that her own
experiences with racism differ,
noting that she can conceal her
Jewish identity, whereas black
skin is immediately visible. She
emphasizes that racism is a
learned behavior and ultimately
a choice, reinforcing the idea
that the American ideal of
equality is still a work in
progress.
Both women agree that while the
song's idealism reflects the
"American dream," it does not
apply equally to all people.
They acknowledge the importance
of diversity and the need for
America to live up to its
promises of equality and justice
for all, as echoed by Martin
Luther King Jr.'s words. Maya
Angelou's recitation of her poem
The Human Family celebrates this
diversity. Despite these
challenges, the Andrea and
Elaine remain hopeful and
committed to the ongoing
struggle for a more inclusive
and just society.
Andrea Hall then talks about her
new book, Wake Up!
- Get Up in the Morning Feeling
Happy to Be Alive Instead of
Wishing You Hadn’t Woken Up.
The book is
educational based on her own
experiences of transforming her
life from experiencing mornings
she woke up without joy to
waking up with joy, and
she lists 4 steps in the
process.
1. Awareness of what in present
relationships, personal and
professional, is blocking the
joy. For Andrea it mean
realizing that she was in an
unhappy marriage and job
situation.
2. Acceptance that it is my
responsibility for the lack of
joy through agreements I have
made.
3. Owning that past decisions
have brought me here and that I
can make new decisions. If I
don't like it, create it
differently.
4. Inspired Action to live life
as I want to live it.
Wake Up is available on Amazon.
Dr. Andrea Hall is also a
personal coach to help with this
journey of Self discovery and
transormation.
