When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Happy Women’s History Month and
to begin the celebration I have
a special guest joining me on
the phone, Molly Murphy
MacGregor, one of the
co-founders of the National
Women’s Alliance. We will be
talking about Women’s History
Alliance which began as the
Women’s History Project and the
origin and changes she has seen
and concerns around women’s
equality and choice for women in
2022 and moving forward. This
year’s theme is, “Women Who
Advocate for Equity, Diversity,
and Inclusion.”
In 1980, the National Women’s
History Project (NWHP) was
founded in Santa Rosa,
California by Molly Murphy
MacGregor, Mary Ruthsdotter,
Maria Cuevas, Paula Hammett and
Bette Morgan to broadcast
women’s historical achievements.
The NWHP started by leading a
coalition that successfully
lobbied Congress to designate
March as National Women’s
History Month, now celebrated
across the land.
Today, the NWHP Now the National
Women’s History Alliance is
known nationally as the only
clearinghouse providing
information and training in
multicultural women’s history
for educators, community
organizations, and parents-for
anyone wanting to expand their
understanding of women
contributions to U. S. history.
2. Our
Guest, Molly Murphy MacGregor,
shares how her mindset changed
from being a girl looking for
prince charming to becoming a
feminist and advocate for
women's history and rights.
Molly describes the path to the
Carter White House in 1979 in
the declaration of at first the
National Women's History Week to
its 1987 establishment as
National Women's History Month
every March. Molly talks about
this year’s theme: “Women Who
Advocate for Equity, Diversity,
and Inclusion.” Some cultural
traditions hold men to be the
only gender worthy of
leadership, Thousands of years
of this patriarchy makes for
such entrenched views. Women's
voices need to be heard, but we
must agree to respect each
other's perceptions. By asking
questions and being willing to
listen, a discussion can happen,
such that the woman's point of
view can at least enter the
discussion. Molly envisions a
Women's Festival in the summer,
rather than a march, to invite
such discussions to take place
in a festive rather than
protesting environment.

March 8 – International Women’s
Day, whose origins trace back to
protests in the U.S. and Europe
to honor and fight for the
political rights for working

Herstory Birthdays:
March 4, 1917 – Jeannette Rankin
(R-MT) took her seat as the
first female member of Congress.
March 4, 1948 (2005) – Jean
O’Leary, lesbian and gay rights
activist, founder of Lesbian
Feminist Liberation, one of the
first lesbian activist groups in
the women’s movement, was an
early member and co-director of
the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force, co-founded National
Coming Out Day.
National Coming Out Day (NCOD)
is an annual LGBT awareness day
observed on October 11 to
support anyone "coming out of
the closet".[1] First celebrated
in the United States in 1988,
the initial idea was grounded in
the feminist and gay liberation
spirit of the personal being
political, and the emphasis on
the most basic form of activism
being coming out to family,
friends, and colleagues, and
living life as an openly lesbian
or gay person.[2] The founders
believed that homophobia thrives
in an atmosphere of silence and
ignorance and that once people
know that they have loved ones
who are lesbian or gay, they are
far less likely to maintain
homophobic or oppressive views.[3]
