When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Today is Labor Day's 140th
celebration in the United
States. Condolences to the
family and community on the
passing of Kathleen Susan Finigan,
local activist for the homeless
and former member of the Sonoma
County Commission for Human
Rights. Happy Birthday greetings
to Rev. Randolph DeJon Hurley
today. And for tomorrow Happy
Birthday to our great
granddaughter Satori Trinity
Jensen as she turns 4 years old.

2. Our
first guestEva Granahan announces the
Apple-y Ever After Festival and
Fundraiser for and at the Arlene
Francis Center is Old Railroad
Square of Santa Rosa on this
Saturday, September 10, 2022,
from Noon to 11 pm. This is a
family affair with food, yoga,
massage, live music and DJs. For
her 30th birthday party she is
helping to raise money for the
Arlene Francis Center, which is
the community cultural center in
the heart of historic Railroad
Square district in downtown
Santa Rosa. This is the first
fundraiser she’s planned in
several years now but is
enjoying the challenge. The
pandemic has affected the AFC
with the inability to offer its
venue for events for a couple of
years, so the funds are sorely
needed. Midnight Sun is
headlining, along with fine
local talent.
About our first Guest:
Eva Granahan is a
Sonoma County local, committed
to social justice and activism,
writes for the Sonoma County
Gazette (free monthly newspaper
across the county). She is the
proud mother of a two-year-old
daughter.
3. Our
second guestMajor (Ret.) Renee Marie
shares why she chose to
volunteer for the Army. She saw
on "Being all you can be," and
it spoke to her servant heart,
especially having a student loan
to pay off. Renee talks about
her experience as one of a few
women among men and some of the
ridicule she received. She also
had to report about a
commander's hand that had a more
than helpful intent. She decided
to retire from the Army in 2016
upon reading the reports of a
presidential candidate's loose
behavior around women. Major
Marie was first introduced to
the Peace Pole Project at the
World Peace Sanctuary in
Wassaic, NY. She was so moved to
see 193 Peace Poles erected for
all member countries of the
United Nations, that she decided
to spread the message of Peace
Poles, "May Peace Prevail on
Earth," to schools. When
called back to duty in
Afghanistan, Major Marie was
invited to place a Peace Pole at
a school in Kabul with 900 co-ed
students, and she relates on the
awkwardness of being confronted
by a local on wearing her
uniform while gifting a Peace
Pole. At a school in Sacramento,
CA, after the Peace Pole
for Schools Placement
Ceremony, a girl stood up and
promised to never bully again.
Her teacher later reported that
this was a sincere statement as
her behavior did change. Over
200,000 Peace Poles have been
planted since 1970.
About our second Guest:
Major (Ret.) Renee Marie
is a Sacramento area artist,
poet, and retired Army Combat
Veteran. Major Marie relocated
to Sacrament from Vermont in
2006 to serve as Chief Patient
Administration Officer for the
Army Medical Command’s West
Coast Community Based Warrior
Transition Unit operating out of
the McClellan Park Airbase North
Highlands. After three years in
2010, the Vermont National Guard
recalled her to join a
Deployment to Kabul,
Afghanistan. There she served as
the Commander of a Level II,
NATO clinic serving over 8,000
U.S. Coalition troops and local
nationals if they met the
medical rules of engagement
criteria “Life, Limb or
Eyesight” emergencies. She holds
an M.S. in Speech-Language
Pathology and worked over 12
years in public school across
the country before returning to
full-time military service.
Major Renee Marie retired from
the Army in 2016.
