• the March for Lives over the weekend in Sonoma County and across the nation to rally for better gun control;

• Pam Chanter receives special Congressional Recognition as the Santa Rosa Junior College President's Medallion Recipient;

• Thirteen Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) journalism students have won 28 press awards for the SRJC Oak Leaf campus paper;

• the Save Athena House zoom meeting this evening, sponsored by NOW Sonoma County Chapter.

2.  Our guest Vesta Copestakes and our host Elaine will be in conversation about the Shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Common Sense Gun Laws. We will also be talking about the recent January 6th Committee, which have been giving us a detailed presentation about what happened that day. Elaine was curious about these two events and thought it would be interesting to be in dialogue with another person and discuss these issues. 

About our Guest: Vesta Copestakes is the former publisher of the Sonoma County Gazette, a community-building publication both in print and online. She believes her mission is to connect people, share knowledge, experiences, and love of our home. Her community service experience includes Forestville Chamber of Commerce (board, vice president, president), Forestville Planning Association (founder and board member), Forestville Education Foundation (founder and board member), Friends of Forestville School (board member), Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Sonoma County (board member). She is a member of the Lower Russian River Municipal Advisory Council and chairs the Vacation Rental Committee.

Herstory Events:

June 17, 1873 – Susan B. Anthony’s trial starts for illegally voting in Rochester, New York, on November 5, 1872.  A federal grand jury indicted her for intentional casting of an illegal vote. They offered to release her on bail, but she refused to pay it and was placed under custody of a federal marshal. . Her lawyer– a very good one named Henry Selden — filed for a habeas corpus writ for her release, but the judge refused it. Just for good measure, the Rochester police also arrested the voting inspectors who had accepted her ballot, and they too refused bail. Upon receiving the sentence of a $100 fine (roughly $2,150 USD today), she told the judge, “I shall never pay a dollar of your unjust penalty.”

Herstory Birthdays:

June 15, 1916 (1989) – Olga Erteszek, Polish immigrant, established the Olga Company in 1960, maker of women’s undergarments, one of the first companies to offer employee profit sharing.

June 2022, In recognition of Juneteenth, Sonoma County Library is highlighting resources and events celebrating the holiday. This year we are specially featuring recommended readings and websites about some traditions (cooking, art, and storytelling) associated with Juneteenth.
