When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
The Senate voted Thursday to
confirm Judge Ketanji (CA Tan
Gee) Brown Jackson for the
Supreme Court, with Vice
President Kamala presiding. The
53-47 vote was along party
lines. Shout out to Republicans
Susan Collins of Maine, Mitt
Romney of Utah and Lisa
Murkowski of Alaska who
supported the confirmation. Was
great to hear the two Republican
women voted to confirm her.
Ken and I attended the play
Release: Unearthing the Silent
Rumblings, a production of
Our Lives Matter Theater Company
(OLMTC), and directed by Dr.
Dianna L. Grayer, at
Congregation Ner Shalom. We
interviewed Dianna
two weeks ago. The vignettes
presented all touched us
greatly, some more than others,
as racial bias and
microaggessions were acted out
on the stage. After the
stage play the audience was
invited to sit and discuss what
they experienced, prompted by
deep questions composed by Dr.
Grayer, a practicing
psychologist. Don't miss Dianna
Grayer's future productions,
and check out her books
sensitive to this issue of skin
color bias..

2.
Our guest,
Vesta Copestakes,
demonstrated her belief in
community involvement as founder and publisher of the
Sonoma County Gazette from 2003
until December 2019, when she
sold it to Sonoma Media. Since
then, she has become active with
the Lower Russian River
Municipal Advisory Council
(LRRMAC), and is now Chair of
the Vacation Rental Committee.
Municipal Advisor Councils (MAC)
advise the County Supervisors on
governance of rural areas and
unincorporated towns. Tourist
dollars have a large economic
impact in Sonoma County, and
vacation rentals help draw the
tourists. Yet there have been
problems experienced in
neighborhoods with vacation
rentals. Sometimes a majority of
the homes in a cul-de-sac have
been vacation rentals, which
affects the neighborhood.
Sometimes renters are not
notified of evacuation mandates
due to natural disasters like
the wildfires we have been
experiencing since 2017. These
issues are brought up at the
Vacation Rental Committee.
A 24-Hour Complaint Hotline is
presently under review by the
County, which residents can use
to report problems with a
vacation rental, not hampered by
Permit Sonoma being closed over
the weekends. A new ordinance
for Vacation Rentals is also
under review by the Sonoma
County Planning Commission and
County Counsel. This ordinance
applies to unhosted rentals
where no responsible party lives
on the property. The proposed
revision can be seen online at
the
website of the MAC.
