When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Today I will do a Commentary on
Memorial Day. It is the last
Monday of the month so Ken will
join me in reciting the Women's
Spaces Pledge.
Today
is a federal holiday,
Memorial Day, originally
known as Decoration Day, is
a federal holiday in the
United States for honoring
and mourning the U.S.
military personnel who died
while serving in the United
States Armed Forces.] From
1868 to 1970, it was
observed on May 30. Since
1971, it is observed on the
last Monday of May.
Many people visit cemeteries
and memorials on Memorial
Day to honor and mourn those
who died while serving in
the U.S. military. Many
volunteers place American
flags on the graves of
military personnel in
national cemeteries.
Memorial Day is also
considered the unofficial
beginning of summer.
The first national
observance of Memorial Day
occurred on May 30, 1868.
Then known as Decoration
Day, the holiday was
proclaimed by Commander in
Chief John A. Logan of the
Grand Army of the Republic
to honor the Union soldiers
who had died in the Civil
War.Memorial Day: Memorial

The song we will be playing at
the musical break is Candles
in the Windows, sung by
Betsy Rose. What is it that we
will spend millions defending
this horror and yet when it
comes to Medicare and Social
Security constant yelling to
either gut them or reduce
benefits. So much suffering.
Students in many colleges and
universities have been calling
for a Cease Fire. Harvard
refused to award degrees to 12
protesting students, so the
decision to protest for students
takes soul searching.
The song I will be playing at
the second musical break is
By My Silence I Give My Consent,
sung by Ellen Bukstel and Nick
Annis. This song expresses what
I believe is appropriate for
today’s show. After the song I
will read the poem of Martin
Niemöller, which is the basis
of the song.
Martin
Niemöller (1892–1984) was a
prominent Lutheran pastor in
Germany. In the 1920s and
early 1930s, he sympathized
with many Nazi ideas and
supported radically
right-wing political
movements. But after Adolf
Hitler came to power in
1933, Niemöller became an
outspoken critic of Hitler’s
interference in the
Protestant Church. He spent
the last eight years of Nazi
rule, from 1937 to 1945, in
Nazi prisons and
concentration camps.
Niemöller is perhaps best
remembered for his postwar
statement, which begins
“First they came for the
socialists, and I did not
speak out…”
--
First they came for the
socialists, and I did not
speak out—because I was not
a socialist.
Then they came for the trade
unionists, and I did not
speak out—because I was not
a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I did not speak
out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and
there was no one left to
speak for me.
—Martin Niemöller
Currently with so many calling
for a cease fire, protesting the
violence in Gaza and all those
suffering because of this in the
middle east, I have picked the
next song to play. The song is
Please Peace, sung by
my dear friend, Linda Ferro. She
wrote this when we were all
protesting the Iraq horror,
especially for the Women's
Spaces TV presentation of
I Am Woman, I Am All Women.
I would like to leave you with
this poem of mine called In Awe.
In Awe
by Elaine B. Holtz
What was this feeling?
Is it God, Is it Jesus
Is it my higher Power or
The Mystery
I feel so solid, so alive
I feel so solid, so knowing
I feel so fearless in faith
As I walked with Ken
It is a daily ritual we both
love
Just Ken, Rosey, and I
A miracle that we are all
together
I see Maria, my neighbor
She puts out imitation
flowers for every holiday
Red ones for Valentines Day
White ones for Christmas
Pink ones and yellow ones
for Mothers Day
We stop
We talk for a while, girl
talk
She lets me know who did my
hair
She wanted to let me know
she likes it
I tell her where to go and
the cost
I do not speak Spanish
Yet we have found a way to
Laugh together!
Talk with one another.
Share languages with one
another!
We teach one another,
We both love our husbands
and dogs
We are different because of
our cultures
But the same because we are
women
We know
We say goodbye and continue
walking
I feel the feeling again
I feel so solid, so
unafraid, so aware
Aware of the green on the
trees
The cracks on the sidewalks
The beautiful Rose gardens
I am in awe
In awe of the great
landscape
In awe of the mystery of it
all
In awe
