When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
I am really excited today.
Joining me on the phone will be
Deva Marie Proto, who is Sonoma
County’s
Clerk-Recorder-Assessor-Registrar
of Voters. I first met Deva when
she was running for the office
the first time, and she has done
a fabulous job for our county.
We will be talking about the
mailers folks will or have
received, the upcoming election
and what they are about, and
general info about voting and
how folks can work at the polls
if they would like,
Also joining me in the studio I
have two special guests from the
Sonoma County League of Women
Voters, Donna Roper – President
and Therese Scherrer – Voter
Service Chair of the Sonoma
County Chapter. They will be
giving us a bit of history about
the League and talk about some
of the upcoming events to help
us all make informed choices
when we vote on March 5. We will
also be talking about their
upcoming Civics Classes via
Zoom.
Since this is Black History
Month, I would like to share an
important quote by Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., about voting:
On
May 17th, 1957, Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. delivered
his speech "Give Us The
Ballot." Delivered on the
steps of the Lincoln
Memorial, the speech touches
upon the frustrations
#CivilRights leaders and
African-Americans were
feeling from the federal
government's inaction three
years after the Brown V.
Board of Education passed in
the Supreme Court. Here is
an important quote:
"I have come to see
more and more that one of
the most decisive steps that
the Negro can take is that
little walk to the voting
booth. That is an important
step. We've got to gain the
ballot, and through that
gain, political power."

Our History is Our
Strength. In the scheme
of things why is this important?
Women have struggled and through
those struggles have
accomplished many positive
things for all of us. Remember
if we did not have the vote, we
would not have a voice in the
decision-making process on those
issues dear to us.
February is Black
History Month, or
National African American
History Month, is an annual
celebration of achievements by
Black Americans and a time for
recognizing the vital role of
African Americans in U.S.
history. The event grew out of
“Negro History Week,” and Since
1976, every U.S. president has
officially designated the month
of February as Black History
Month. Other countries around
the world, including Canada and
the United Kingdom, also devote
a month to celebrating Black
history.
In honor of this month and to
honor the accomplishments of
African American Women. Each
Monday during Black History
Month I will be highlighting two
African American women and for
this show in the segment
Our History is our
Strength they will be Rosa Parks
and Dr. Maya Angelou.
At our musical break, I will be
playing the spoken word
recording of, “Phenomenal
Women,” performed by the author,
Maya Angelou. A bit of history
about this poem. "Phenomenal
Woman" is a poem by Maya
Angelou, first published in
1978. The poem rejects narrow
societal expectations of women
and proposes an alternative
perspective on what defines real
beauty. Confidence and comfort
in one's own skin, the speaker
insists, are the markers of true
beauty.
The speaker refers to an elusive
"secret" about herself that
conventionally attractive women
struggle to understand. She
explains that she doesn't look
like the models glorified by the
fashion industry, and that when
she stars to reveal her secret
these other women don't believe
her. The speaker claims that her
beauty is manifested in her wide
hips, her confident gait, and
her smile. She's an
extraordinary woman. When you
think of an extraordinary woman,
that's the speaker Maya Angelou.

poem by

2. Our
first Guest: Deva Marie Proto,
the Sonoma
County Registrar of Voters
(SCRV), helps us to understand
the process of voting in Sonoma
County. We should get two
pamphlets in the mail: The
Sonoma County Information Guide,
and the California State Primary
Election Guide. Deva explains
the difference, with the focus
on those elections affecting our
county, and those that are
statewide like the proposition,
state offices, and federal
offices. She also clarifies why
the candidates for their party’s
Presidential nominee is not in
these pamphlets and only on the
California Secretary of State’s
(SoS) website, with their
listing seen by
Clicking Here for SoS. Since
2021 all registered voters will
receive a ballot by mail. Deva
alerts us that we should receive
a text this week from the SoS’s
office letting them know the
ballots have been mailed. The
ballots can be mailed, dropped
off at the SCRV, dropped in a
ballot drop box, or brought to
one of the 31 in-person voting
centers (for locations
Deva also placed ballot drop
boxes around the county, having
listened to citizen suggestions,
and there placement is listed on
the SCRV’s website (Click
Here for SCRV). The Primary
Election is on Tuesday, March 5,
2024. If a non-presidential
candidate gains over 50% of the
vote, that candidate will be on
the November 5th ballot. If no
candidate receives over 50% of
the vote, then the top 2 vote
getters will be on the November
5th ballot. Deva reminds us that
one needs to be registered with
a qualified Party (for their
listing see the
SOS webpage by Clicking Here)
to be able to vote for the
Presidential nominate. SCRV’s
website is very informative (Click
Here for SCRV), as is the
California SoS on Elections
website (Click
Here for SoS).
About our Guest: Deva
Marie Proto
has been employed with
the County since 2007, and in
the Clerk-Recorder-Assessor
department since 2009. She grew
up in Sonoma County, has a
bachelor’s degree and a master’s
in public administration from
Sonoma State University. She is
serving her second term as an
elected County official.
3. Our
second guests: Donna Roper
and
Therese Scherrer
give us the history of the
League of Woman Voters (LWV).
LWV began nationally just 6
months after the passage of the
19th Amendment for Woman’s
Suffrage in 1920, so the new
women voters would be informed
voters. The local LWV began as
the Santa Rosa Chapter in 1953
and in 1978 emerged as the
Sonoma County Chapter. Up until
the end of the 1960s, LWV hosted
the Presidential Debates, but
push-back from the Parties on
the rules of debate caused the
LWV to stop its involvement. It
hopes to educate the public with
its workshops and forums it
hosts locally. It is an
all-volunteer organization, and
it welcomes new members,
especially those who would like
to participate in the
organization of LWV events. A
Candidate Forum for the SoCo
Board of Supervisors race in
District 3 is Wednesday evening.
The LWV Sonoma website has
events listed on its home page.
The LWV Sonoma is offering free
zoom Civics Class series of 3
episodes beginning on Tuesday
February 6. RSVP is required for
each class to get the Zoom
Information. If you have missed
an episode, you can see them at
the
LWV Sonoma YouTube Channel.
These events can also be seen in
our Announcements
section below. The LWV has
been reaching out to high school
and college students to inform
them on the importance of voting
and to encourage them to vote.
About our Guest: Donna
Roper is the current
President, League of Women
Voters of Sonoma County. Donna
Roper has always been involved
in social justice issues as
early as high school and
throughout her career in the non
–profit field. She grew up with
three sisters outside of Boston
but ended up in San Francisco in
1976 where she started a 25-year
career with the YMCA while
earning her master’s degree in
education. She then worked at
the Sonoma County Volunteer
Center, Camp Okizu (a camp for
children with cancer) and
finally River to Coast
Children’s Services in
Guerneville. She initially got
involved with the League by
helping to distribute voter
registration cards in western
Sonoma County and then became a
moderator for some of the
candidate forums and became the
Voter Service Chair. Now she
leads the LWV organization as
President.
About our Guest: Therese
Scherrer is currently
the Voter Service Chair, League
of Women Voters of Sonoma County
Therese is new to California,
migrating to Sonoma County from
the Upper Midwest in 2020. A
30-year League veteran, her
involvement spans across
Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota,
and now Sonoma County as Voter
Service Chair. Her career path
led from the high-tech sector to
human services and foundation
management, with side trips into
homesteading, llama raising, and
organic farming. She holds
undergraduate degrees in
Communications and Computer
Science, and a master’s in
planning and social policy.
Therese is happiest getting her
hands dirty in the garden,
biking year-round, hiking in the
redwoods, and working on social
and political issues.

history alive. Shout out to
Co-Founder and Retiring
Executive Director, Molly
McGregor who will be on the show
when we celebrate Women’s
History Month in March for
making the fabulous list of
Women in History where I get
most of the info I present in
this Herstory segment.
Herstory Events:
Rosa Parks (1913-2005)
Rosa Parks, a trailblazer
known for her courageous
participation in the
Montgomery Bus Boycott,
ignited the movement against
racial segregation on public
transit. Her defiance to
give up her seat led to her
arrest on Dec. 1, 1955, but
led to revolutionary change.
The United States Congress
has since honored her as
“the first lady of civil
rights” and “the mother of
the freedom movement.”
Maya Angelou (1928-2014)
Maya Angelou has a distinct
voice as a Black writer and
activist. She left a legacy
with her large body of work,
including memoirs, poems,
essays and plays. She rose
to fame in 1969 after the
publication of “I Know Why
the Caged Bird Sings,” one
of her autobiographies
detailing her early years as
a young Black woman.
