When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: With
so much going on in this world I
thought I would do a commentary
for this show. The theme of the
show for today is,
Children Live What They Learn.
I am going to play some special
music and will be sharing some
thoughts on what is going on in
today’s world from my
perspective.
I am also going to comment on
The Seven Principles of
Kwaanza.

Children Live What They
Learn.
A simple but powerful guide to
parenting the old-fashioned
way-instilling values through
example-inspired by Dorothy Law
Nolte ,"Children Learn What They
Live," the celebrated poem she
wrote in 1954 on jealousy,
praise, honesty, fairness, and
more. What inspired this was
several articles came out about
Gang Violence and putting more
police on campus and bringing
back a Gang Violence program
that was successful in our
county which I questioned since
it was effective how come it was
taken away. Also, it is my hope
that perhaps if we start
thinking about some of the
things that I will be
presenting, a lot of this young
violence against one another can
stop.
For this portion I am going to
go over the 1954 Poster,
Children Live What They Learn by
Dorothy Law Nolte.
She’s a woman who understood the
field of positive youth
development before it was
invented.
What inspired me to talk about
this was reading in our local
paper that gang activity, racism
and violence is on the rise in
schools. From all that I have
read, it appears that the best
way to start solving the problem
is to put more police in
schools. Although that may be
part of the solution, it takes
more than just putting police on
campuses. It is my hope that in
doing this review it will
inspire people to add more
counselors, have focus groups
with youth and increase the
funding, not decrease it for our
schools. Our children are the
future and we must invest in
them. I will go over the list -

Seven Principles of
Kwanzaa
If you haven’t noticed yet, the
number seven holds a lot of
power and symbolism in
celebrating Kwanzaa: The word
has seven letters, the
celebration lasts seven days,
and the holiday focuses on seven
main principles, or Nguzo Saba.
These seven principles reinforce
African values, and Kwanzaa
observers should spend each day
of the festival reflecting on
one principal holiday focuses on
seven main principles, or Nguzo
Saba. These seven principles
reinforce African values, and
Kwanzaa observers should spend
each day of the festival
reflecting on one principle.
Kwanzaa began on December 26 and
ended on January 1. Kwanzaa is a
seven-day, non-religious
celebration of family, culture,
and community. Each day honors a
particular African-derived
principle, and the final day
culminates in a feast (called
Karamu) on New Year’s Day.
Ken and I did not do a show on
Jan. 1, but did broadcast a
rerun of our show of December
26, 2022 with Sabryyah
Abdullah. When I
listened to it on New Years Day,
I remembered the seven
principles of the holiday and
thought for today’s show it
might be a promising idea to
talk about them as it relates to
our children and their needs.
The interview with Sabryyah
talks about Kawanza in depth and
can be accessed with the button

Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa (/ ˈkwɑːn.zə /) is
an annual celebration of
African-American culture
from December 26 to January
1, culminating in a communal
feast called Karamu ,
usually on the sixth day. It
was created by activist
Maulana Karenga , based on
African harvest festival
traditions from various
parts of West and Southeast
Africa.
The Seven Principles of
Kwanzaa
Despite its relatively new
history, Kwanzaa is observed
by millions of Black
Americans in the United
States and spans from
December 26 through January
1. Each day of the week has
a different word in Swahili
to represent one of the
seven core principles of the
holiday:
1. Umoja (unity)
2. Kujichagulia
(self-determination)
3. Ujima (collective work
and responsibility)
4. Ujamaa (cooperative
economics)
5. Nia (purpose)
6. Kuumba (creativity)
7. Imani (faith)
