When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
I am so excited, joining on the
phone today is, Stephanie King,
Marketing Director for Charles
M. Schulz Museum & Research
Center. I thought it would be
fun to talk about the history of
the research center and some
Christmas programs happening
this year for the whole family.
Sounds like a lot of fun to me.
Happy Birthday to my Great
Granddaughter Kaya Sierra Jensn
who will be two years old on
Nov. 7 which is tomorrow, what a
blessing she is to our family.
Wow I am A Great Grandmother,
how lucky to have lived to enjoy
all this. Amazing how fast they
grow up. A reminder our children
are the future, and we must
never lose sight of that.
The news from Gaza and the war
of revenge is costing children
their lives. Wars are fought and
create the next generation of
revenge seekers.
In Sunday's Press Democrat in
the special Vietnam War section
was an article about Josue
Lopez's horrific experiences as
an Army draftee in battle. Josue
is the former program director
of Radio KKUP. Because of the
pressures of holding a full-time
job, Josue had to drop a class,
which disqualified him for the
student deferment from the
draft, and within week he was
called up. In spite of racist
bullying, he had to make the
most of terrible battle
conditions and suffering.
Click here for a pdf of that
article. I can't help
remember former Defense
Secretary Robert McNamarra's
book confession that the war was
a mistake. A mistake that was so
costly in casualties, whose
budget could have been used for
social programs and healthcare
for all.
A 1975 US Senate
subcommittee estimated
around 1.4 million civilian
casualties in South Vietnam
because of the war,
including 415,000 deaths. An
estimate by the Department
of Defense after the war
gave a figure of 1.2 million
civilian casualties,
including 195,000 deaths.[1]
According to statistics from
the South Vietnamese
Ministry of Health, 44.5% of
civilians admitted to
hospitals between 1967 and
1970 were wounded by mines
or mortars, 21.2% by guns or
grenades, and 34.3% by
artillery or bombing.[2]
Guenter Lewy in 1978
estimated 1,353,000 total
deaths in North and South
Vietnam during the period
1965–1974 in which the U.S.
was most engaged in the war.
Lewy reduced the number of
Viet Cong (VC) and People's
Army of Vietnam (PAVN)
battle deaths claimed by the
U.S. by 30 percent (in
accordance with the opinion
of United States Department
of Defense officials), and
assumed that one third of
the reported battle deaths
of the PAVN/VC may have
actually been civilians. He
estimates that between 30
and 46% of the total war
deaths were civilians. His
estimate of total deaths is
reflected in the table
below:.
Ken and I attended the
Winterblast in the South A
Street Art District of Santa
Rosa, nicknamed the SOFA
district. The Winterblast
featured two parades of sofa
floats, with everyone costumed.
It was a good time to unwind and
be out of the ordinary. We were
thinking of having a Women's
Spaces sofa float next year, We
are seeking volunteers to help
us with that.

2. Our Guest, Stephanie
King, shares the coming
events to the Charles M.
Schulz Museum in Santa
Rosa, CA, which
is
celebrating its 51st
Anniversary. The museum opened
two years after
the famous Peanuts cartoonist
died, intending it to be a
center for understanding
cartooning art, with educational
programs. Stephanie notes that
Schulz was interested early as a
kid to be a cartoonist. The
characters are all pieces of
Schulz’s personality. Many
programs are geared toward
children, to expose them to the
exciting world of creativity
starting with a blank sheet.
Schulz would sit daily at his
table in the Warm Puppy Café in
the Snoopy Ice Arena, and often
would draw a cartoon for a young
person to encourage them. The
Museum hosts talks and programs
with other cartoonists.
Stephanie announces some of the
special events through the end
of this year. On November 8,
2023, 11 AM to 5 PM, Veterans
Day Dedication and Free day.
Charles Schulz was a veteran.
This year is the 50th
anniversary of the animated
Peanuts Thanksgiving Special,
which will be celebrated on
November 18, 2023. On that day
kids get in free if food items
are brought to donate to the
Redwood Empire Food Bank. On
December 31, 2023 will be a
Happy New Year Charlie Brown day
with Balloon Drops at noon and
at 3 PM.
