When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
I am so excited, joining me in
the studio today is a woman I
truly admire Letitia Hanke, who
is a small-town girl from Lake
County, California, who is CEO
of ARS Roofing Company and the
founder of the LIME Foundation.
When I was doing the research on
her I was so impressed when I
came upon this statement that
she made about her motivation
and goal for the LIME
Foundation. This is what I read:
The LIME Foundation fulfills
a lifelong dream. I was bullied
as a child due to the color of
my skin, and it took a toll on
me even into adulthood. My goal
for The LIME Foundation is to
give people the support needed
to succeed despite any
disadvantages they may have.
Ken and I attended the
10th Anniversary Memorial of
Andy Lopez's murder by
a Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy
Eric Gelhaus within seconds of
the encounter. Despite Gelhaus'
boast of being a rifle expert,
he mistook Andy's toy gun for
the real thing at an empty lot
known for boys playing there
with toy guns. Andy's mother
prepared a speech, and it was
read to the crowd in Spanish and
English. She lamented the
silence of so many county
residents, when such a tragedy
can happen to their child, too.
I happen to know of two other
women who lost their sons to
police shooting: Valerie
Greenoak who lost her son Jesse
Hamilton to Santa Rosa Police
responding to his carrying a
knife leaving his special needs
home; and Marnie Wroth who lost
her son Branch Wroth in Rohnert
Park to police shooting. We need
to support the strengthening of
IOLERO, the Independent Office
of Law Enforcement Outreach, to
keep the Sheriff accountable,
and to support Police
accountability in our cities.
Shout out to the North
Bay Black Chamber of Commerce
(NBBCC), they had a
great mixer. Ken and I were
there. Lots of fascinating
displays. I want to do a shout
out for a member business that
stood out, and I just love the
name of this place,
Saucy Mama’s Jook Joint,
fabulous food for a fabulous
event. Shout out to NBBCC
President Nancy Rogers who
continues to inspire us all.
Juke
joint (also juke joint, jook
house, jook, or juke) is the
vernacular term for an
informal establishment
featuring music, dancing,
gambling, and drinking,
primarily operated by
African Americans in the
southeastern United States.
A juke joint may also be
called a "barrelhouse". The
Jook was the first secular
cultural arena to emerge
among African American
Freedmen.
2. Our Guest,
Leticia Hanke, shares
her life journey that led her to
establish the Lime Foundation to
help at-risk kids succeed. She
herself faced bullying growing
up in a small town in Lake
County as one of only a couple
of black children in the school.
Since her parents were
entrepreneurs, she vowed to
prove the bullies wrong who told
her she would not amount to
anything.
Leticia studied music
in college but needed to work
part-time jobs to afford the
education. She was hired as a
receptionist in a roofing
company and worked her way up to
becoming the office manager. The
owner decided to retire and
offered the company to Leticia.
She earned her contractor’s
license and took over ARS
Roofing and Gutters.
Leticia joined the North Bay
Black Chamber of Commerce, who
helped her make a business plan
and form banking relationships
for loans.
Leticia fondly remembers
a teacher who in her high school
took her aside at lunchtime and
taught her to play trumpet to
channel the energy of
frustration with the bullying
she received. Leticia vowed to
also be that one person who
changed the life of a child.
With the success of her roofing
company, she then looked to
establish a non-profit that
would assist at-risk youth to
succeed with practical skills,
which she named the Lime
Foundation. It is named after
her son Emil, spelled backward,
as he faced bullying in school
for his skin color.
A big boost in recognition came
with her appearance on the
Returning the Favor Show with
Mike Rowe in 2020, that reached
millions of viewers and awarded
her a grant for the Lime
Foundation. The recording of the
show can be seen on the Lime
Foundation website, just
Leticia learned to collaborate
with other non-profits to spread
the programs. She recounts the
story of one of the first
graduates of the Lime program
who landed a job with a local
contractor and after 6 years
earned his general contractor’s
license.
If folks would like to help at
risk youth succeed there are
volunteer opportunities with
Lime Foundation. Contractors are
needed to mentor and hire youth.
Sponsors of students are a
valuable part of the Lime
program, as are corporate
sponsorships.
About our Guest:
Leticia Hanke is a
small-town girl from Lake
County, California, Letitia
(LA-TISH-A) Hanke (HANK-EE) grew
up dreaming of a music career.
Recognized from childhood for
her musical talents, she
attended Sonoma State University
envisioning a future in the
performing and recording arts.
When the opportunity arose, she
took a position at a prominent
roofing company and managed the
business for 8 years. In 2004,
she started her own roofing
company, ARS Roofing, Gutters &
Solar. In March 2022, she
celebrated 26 years in the
industry. She currently employs
24 full-time, year-round
employees servicing the North
Bay in California. Letitia’s
vision to advocate for the
disadvantaged inspired her to
start the 501c3 nonprofit
foundation called The LIME
Foundation in 2015. Through
three programs, her non-profit
advocates for at-risk youth in
the community along with seniors
and veterans, by providing
health services, music and arts,
technology, and construction
training.
