When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: February
is Black History Month and
tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. We
have a special treat for
everyone, Ken and I will be
reading the poem I wrote,
“Friends and Lovers.” This is
becoming a tradition every
year.’
Joining me on the phone for this
special Valentine’s show will be
Vesta Copestakes former
publisher for the Sonoma County
Gazette and we will be talking
about how she handles her
activism and relationship which
can be challenging and how she
will be celebrating Valentines
Day. This is going to be a
dynamic show.
Happy Chinese New Year. 2023 is
the Year of the Rabbit. What’s
in Store for the Year of the
Rabbit? The Year of the Rabbit,
we’re meant to take a step back,
and (if you can believe it)
chill. Rabbits are quick, but
gentle creatures, and 2023 will
be a year when thoughtful action
is rewarded more than huge
risks. After all the difficulty
and tumult of the last few
years, 2023 is for cultivating
peace and patience!
February is Black History Month
Black History Month recognizes
and honors important people and
events in the history of
African-American history. In
1926 noted historian, Carter G.
Woodson, originated the idea of
“Negro History Week”. Woodson
chose the second week of
February because it marked the
birthdays of two Americans who
greatly influenced the lives and
social condition of African
Americans – former President
Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist
Frederick Douglass.
The tradition of what became
Black History Month greatly
influenced the expansion of
academic scholarship and the
corresponding recognition of the
rich history of African
Americans. The theme for Black
History Month 2023 is,
“Celebrating Black Resistance.
“African Americans have resisted
historic and ongoing oppression,
in all forms, especially the
racial terrorism of lynching,
racial pogroms, and police
killings since our arrival upon
these shores,” the Association
for the Study of African
American Life and History said.
“These efforts have been to
advocate for a dignified
self-determined life in a just
democratic society in the United
States and beyond the United
States political jurisdiction.”
Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day and
here is a bit of history:
By the Victorian Age, sending
your love a note emblazoned with
hearts was a long-established
yearly tradition in England. In
America, people were writing
each other love notes, too, but
it was not until 1847 that the
holiday went industrial. Ester
Howland, daughter of a
stationary store owner, started
mass-producing embossed, lacy
Valentine’s Day cards in 1847,
setting the scene for the modern
tradition of using the
sentiments of greeting card
company employees to express our
deepest feelings for one
another.

Friends and Lovers
- poem of Elaine B. Holtz, who
reads it her partner Ken Norton.

3.
Guest, Vesta Copestakes,
talks about love, her exposure
to it, a loving relationship in
later life, and the community
aspect of love, affording lots
of new relationships through
volunteering for committees and
action groups. Vesta shares the
importance of love in her being
raised by a single father, which
she would later have in common
with him through the raising of
her daughter as a single mother.
Vesta met her second husband,
Alan Joseph, later in life
through a business relationship.
When they compared priorities in
their lives, both listed their
children as being the most
important. Sharing more notes
convinced them that their
relationship could be solid.
Mutual respect is paramount,
with no demands made on the
other, yet in a spirit of
cooperation. Listen for yourself
as Elaine and Vesta share
insights on loving relationships
formed in the later part of
life.
About Vesta Copestakes
is the former publisher of the
Sonoma County Gazette, a
community-building publication
both in print and online. She
believes her mission is to
connect people, share knowledge,
experiences, and love of our
home. Her community service
experience includes Forestville
Chamber of Commerce (board, vice
president, president),
Forestville Planning Association
(founder and board member),
Forestville Education Foundation
(founder and board member),
Friends of Forestville School
(board member), Big Brothers and
Big Sisters of Sonoma County

of 19th century women’s right
movement, national suffrage
strategist, lecturer, activist.
February 16, 1870 (1927) –
Leonora O’Reilly, labor
organizer, founding member of
the Woman’s Trade Union League,
helped found NAACP.
February 16, 1905 (1988) –
Louise Larson, first Chinese
American and first Asian
American reporter in a
mainstream daily paper (1926),
received many awards, wrote
memoir Sweet Bamboo (1989).
February 18, 1931 (2019) – Toni
Morrison, Pulitzer Prize winning
novelist, first African-American
to win the Nobel Prize for
Literature in 1993.
February 18, 1934 (1992) – Audre
Geraldine Lorde, writer,
authored a book of poetry or
essay almost every year, fought
sexism and homophobia, joined
the struggle for civil rights
and feminism, created Kitchen
Table Women of Color Press with
others in 1988, wrote A Burst of
Light to highlight her response
to liver cancer.
Kitchen Table: Women of
Color Press was an activist
feminist press that was
closely related to the
National Black Feminist
Organization (NBFO) which
was started in 1980
following a phone
conversation between Barbara
Smith and at the suggestion
of her friend, poet Audre
Lorde. Beverly and Barbara
Smith and their associate
Demita Frazier together
cofounded the Combahee River
Collective (CRC).[1]
The Kitchen Table: Women of
Color Press was most active
beginning in 1981, but the
Press became inactive soon
after Audre Lorde's death in
1992. Smith explains how the
motivation for starting a
press run by and for women
of color was that "as
feminist and lesbian of
color writers, we knew that
we had no options for
getting published, except at
the mercy or whim of others,
whether in the context of
alternative or commercial
publishing, since both are
white-dominated."[2]
Smith has stated, "Until
this society completely
transforms itself, and
justice for all people
prevails, there will
undoubtedly be a need for
Kitchen Table: Women of
Color Press."
