When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz: Joining
me on the phone today is Shawnie
Rosin a local musician who is
part of the organizing committee
for the First Annual Honey Rose
Music Fest Saturday, January 28,
2023 from 3-11 pm At Sebastopol
Community Cultural Center, The
festival is to honor the life
and achievements of Rosemary
'Honey Rose’ Conner who was a
beloved singer, friend,
preschool teacher and
inspiration to many- who danced
in numerous circles and sang
with over 30 bands throughout
the North Bay. She is a woman
who made a difference and
thought my listeners need to
know more about her and the
festival.
I have a special guest joining
me on the phone, Nancy Wang who
is one of the founders and
President of the Redwood Empire
Chinese Association. We will be
talking about their organization
as well as some ideas around the
celebration of the Chinese New
Year and its meaning. Happy
Chinese New Year, the year of
the Rabbit.
--
Over the weekend there were some
rallies and marches on the 50th
Anniversary of Roe
v. Wade. Here
are some news report links:
Last
week our guest to talk about the
Martin Luther King Birthday
Celebration had to cancel. It is
important to recognize the
winner of the annual student
speech contest, Esmarelda Meza,
Junior at Elsie Allen High
School.
As reported in the
Press Democrat (January 156,
2023, “Dr. Martin Luther King
Jr. once said, ‘Power at its
best is love implementing the
demands of justice.’ With this,
I believe there are two types of
power — power based on control
and power based on change,” Meza
said.
“Power based on control is a
person taking action for the
reasons of self interest that
only benefit themselves. Power
based on change is a person
taking action for the reasons of
love that benefit all. Who says
taking action for reasons of
love that benefit all cannot be
the new mindset?” she added.
The
runner up student speakers are:
Layla Parrish, Senior at Rancho
Cotati High School and Gabriel
Lopez, Senior at Rancho Cotati
High School.

3.
Second Guest, Nancy Wang
shares the mission of the
Redwood Empire Chinese
Association (RECA),
which she helped found in 1988.
The first need to meet was to
teach children of immigrants and
adopted Chinese children the
Chinese language. The cultural
arts like dancing, chorus,
martial arts and calligraphy
were soon added as activities,
along with the remembrance of
festivals. We just entered the
Lunar New Year
with the New Moon on January 21,
and this is the year of
the Rabbit. Nancy
describes some of the qualities
the people born in the year of
the Rabbit share. All are
welcome to become members or
attend the various RECA
activities. About half the
members of RECA are not of Asian
ancestry.
About our Guest Nancy
Wang is Chinese
American who was born in Taiwan.
She attended junior college in
Japan and settled in California
with her husband in 1977. She
has been part of the Redwood
Empire Chinese Association since
it began in a garage in 1988
with the goal of teaching our
children Chinese culture and
language.
Nancy has been involved in many
organizations and committees and
has served on the Santa Rosa's
City Council Advisory Committee
(CAB) for 15 years, plus many
other associated civic
committees.
She has been honored with
various awards from city, state,
federal government both
personally and on behalf of the
Redwood Chinese Assoc. (RECA).
She is the mother of three
children and six grandchildren.
She is excited that her oldest
grandson has started college and
soon will begin a new generation
to join RECA.
