When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary by Elaine B. Holtz:
Congratulations to Leslie Graves
for her organizing for Santa
Rosa, CA the Women's March: We
Won't go Back on last Wednesday
July 13, 2022. It drew over 600
women to the rally, who had many
networking opportunities to work
for restoration of a Women's
Right to Choose what is best for
her body.
Condolences to the family for
the passing on July 7, 2022 of
Ann Gray Byrd, a beloved
activist in Sonoma County in the
NAACP, Commission for the Status
of Women, Community Action
Partnership, and as an ordained
minister advocating for the
LGBTQIA+ and other disadvantaged
communities. Here is the Press
Democrat article about her:

Today is World Listening Day. Of
course, that is perfect for a
radio show!

2. Our
first guest
Shekeyna Black announces the Raise the Roof Festival
coming on Saturday, August 13th,
at the Monte Rio Amphitheater to
help raise funds for the needed
new roof. There is a great
lineup and headlines Momotumbo
SF with former members of Malu
and Santana. She also announces the
special studio performance of
Shana Morrison &
Caledonia on
Saturday, July 30 at 8 PM at the
6th Street Playhouse in Santa
Rosa. Shana is the daughter of
the Northern Irish
singer/songwriter Van Morrison.
The events will be listed under
Announcements
until they pass.
About our Guest: Shekeyna Black is the Executive
Director of the Peace & Justice
Center of Sonoma County. She
wears a second hat as the Public
Relations Specialist at 6th
Street Playhouse. She is
passionate about the creative
arts and the key role that
music, theatre & dance play in
our lives.
Previously, she was the Booking
Agent at Redwood Cafe in Cotati
until the pandemic happened,
where she and the team were the
recipients of the 2019 Boho
Award for Best Live Music Venue.
3. Our
second guestCecilia Sofranko
likes to be
referred with the pronouns
she/her or they/them, which
sparked the first question from
our host Elaine on what they
signify. Cecilia is intent on
decolonization of ourselves
from norms of our colonial past
of patriarchy and Puritans that
enslaves us in our own skin. She
holds that liberation if found
beneath the oppressive layers.
Cecilia noted that some of the
founding fathers were in their
20's, with most middle age except Ben Franklin
who was 70,
and white men. Cecilia describes
her coming out as taking some
time until she was age 25, as
her mother dissuaded her when
she announced she had a crush on
a girl. When asked where she
found her confidence in making
this decision, she replied that
she would be miserable if not.
Cecilia said that 41% of
Transgender folk commit suicide
compared to the rest of society
at 1%. She feels that language
is the first step, therefore the
pronouns of choice for identity.
She teaches us the ABC's of
LGBTQIA+.
L =
Lesbian
G = Gay man
B =
Bisexual
T =
Transgender
Q =
Queer - a sort of umbrella
term for those not
heterosexual.
I =
Intersex, formerly known as
hermaphrodite; someone not
having tje standard xx or xy chromosomes;
sometimes with both female
and male genitalia;
differing from standard male
and female bodies.
A =
Asexual, lack of sexual
attraction.
+ =
stay tuned for new
revelations.
Cecilia
is quite lively and expressive
on the air and has some
insights worth
listening to.
About our Guest: Cecilia
Sofranko (pronouns:
she/her or they/them) is a queer
musician, song writer and
photographer from Northern
California dedicated to the work
of decolonization in all aspects
of life. Cecilia’s passion for
LGBTQ+ education began as a
teenage “ally” before finding
her own identity in her late
20’s. Coming out later in life
as a queer, gender
non-conforming person provided a
lot of perspective that she
continues to share in hopes of
allowing space for furthered
education and nuance in
conversations around
marginalized identities.

Today is July 18, 2022,
shh... do you hear that?
It’s the sound of World
Listening Day on July 18.
World Listening Day is
hosted every year by the
World Listening Project, a
nonprofit organization that
is “devoted to understanding
the world and its natural
environment, societies, and
cultures through the
practice of listening and
field recording.” They
explore acoustic ecology, a
discipline that studies the
relationship between humans
and the natural world as
mediated through sound. So
quiet down, open your ears,
and get ready to study
soundscapes on World
Listening Day.
July 19-20, 1848 – The
Seneca Falls Convention, the
country’s first women’s
rights convention, is held
in Seneca Falls, New York
Women’s Rights Movement.
From Wikipedia: The
Declaration of Sentiments,
also known as the
Declaration of Rights and
Sentiments,[1] is a document
signed in 1848 by 68 women
and 32 men—100 out of some
300 attendees at the first
women's rights convention to
be organized by women.
Held in Seneca Falls, New
York, the convention is now
known as the Seneca Falls
Convention. The principal
author of the Declaration
was Elizabeth Cady Stanton,
who modeled it upon the
United States Declaration of
Independence. She was a key
organizer of the convention
along with Lucretia Coffin
Mott, and Martha Coffin
Wright.
According to the North Star,
published by Frederick
Douglass, whose attendance
at the convention and
support of the Declaration
helped pass the resolutions
put forward, the document
was the "grand movement for
attaining the civil, social,
political, and religious
rights of women."[2][3]
Herstory Birthdays:
July 18, 1908 (1981) – Mildred
Ryder, adopted the name “Peace
Pilgrim” in 1953, a peace
activist who was the first woman
to walk the Appalachian Trail in
one season, walked more than
25,000 miles promoting peace for
28 years.
July 22, 1849 (1887) – Emma
Lazarus, poet, wrote “The New
Colossus,” (1883), which was
later inscribed on the Statue of
Liberty: “Give me your tired,
your poor, your huddled masses
yearning to breathe free.”
The New Colossus
by Emma Lazarus
Not like the brazen giant of
Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride
from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset
gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch,
whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and
her name
Mother of Exiles. From her
beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her
mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin
cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your
storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your
tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to
breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your
teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless,
tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden
door!"
