When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Commentary
by our host Elaine B. Holtz: Joining me
on the phone this morning will be Christian Nunes who is
the President for the National Organization for Women.
Christian will be joining me from Washington DC. As the
grassroots arm of the women’s movement, the National
Organization for Women is dedicated to its multi-issue
and multi-strategy approach to women’s rights and is the
largest organization of feminist grassroots activists in
the United States. NOW has hundreds of chapters and
hundreds of thousands of members and activists in all 50
states and the District of Columbia. Since our founding
in 1966, NOW’s purpose is to take action through
intersectional grassroots activism to promote feminist
ideals, lead societal change, eliminate discrimination,
and achieve and protect the equal rights of all women
and girls in all aspects of social, political, and
economic life. It is an honor having Christian Nunes as
my guest and to bring her to the airways of Northern
California.
On August 26th, 2021, the Sonoma
County chapter of the national organization for women
celebrated Women's Equality Day via zoom and the Board
of Supervisors presented the chapter with the gold
resolution honoring the 19th amendment Centennial
calendar 2020 produced by the group.
Supervisor Lynda
Hopkins read the Gold resolution. Since she read it so
beautifully, I wanted to share it with my listeners
by playing it for the first segment of the
show. You can click the image to the left of the Gold
Resolution to open the NOW Sonoma webpage featuring it.
Can you believe it, this is the
last show of the month for September? Where did the
month go? We will be doing the Women's Spaces Pledge
today.
A reminder: on Saturday October
2nd, there will be a Women's March/ Rally happening at
Courthouse Square in downtown Santa Rosa from 10 to noon.
I am honored to be one of the speakers and if you come
up and say hi to me, I will be happy to give you a copy
of the Women's Spaces Pledge. This is a very important
event as much is happening all across the country in
protest of the Texas Abortion Ban. People will be urged
to sign two petitions:
For the passage of H. R.
3755 Women's Health Protection Act of 2021.
For the passage of the
John Lewis voting rights bill, H.R. 1 For the People
Act of 2021

2. Our
guest Christian Nunes shares her path to
national leadership of the National Organization of
Women (NOW). Christian describes the changes NOW
has gone through since its founding 55 years ago. NOW is
taking a holistic approach to Women's Rights, realizing
the intersectionality of other issues affecting women, like
racial inequality, sexual orientation, and disability.
Christian said that NOW is offering workshops
Run NOW to train the new generation of feminists on how to run political
campaigns as a candidate and campaign staff. Another
series of workshops for NOW Chapters to achieve new
heights is Level-Up, with practical trainings
on fundraising and enhancing engagement. The NOW website
now.org
is becoming an even greater resource. Christian
encourages us to gather on Saturday October 2 for the
Women's March/Rally locally for this national event.
Many organizations have signed on to sponsor this March.
Some pressing issues were discussed, like the pandemic
affecting women in the service industries, and NOW is
encouraging you to contact your Federal representives to
pass the Pay Check Fairness Act. The national issues for
feminists to be active on can be found on the NOW
website at
https://now.org/nap/ .
About our Guest:Christian Nunes, MBA, MS, LCSW, became
NOW president in August 2020. She was previously
appointed Vice President by the board in May 2019. As
the second African American president in the
organization’s history, the youngest person of color,
and the youngest president in more than 40 years, Nunes
is leading the organization through an intersectional
lens, bringing a diverse coalition of grassroots
activists to work against structural sexism and racism.
Christian is a former NOW board member and committee
chair, as well as a licensed clinical social worker,
consultant, and woman-minority business owner. She is an
active community organizer and public speaker, regularly
featured at events such as the March for Black Women,
Women’s March Events, and rallies around the country in
support of the Equal Rights Amendment and immigration
rights. Along with her activism for mental health,
Christian has more than 20 years of experience
advocating for children’s and women’s issues.
