When our representatives are making important
decisions that impact all of our lives I believe it is important to ask
one basic question before making
those decisions, Is this good for
the children? Just imagine what our world would be
like if that question was asked prior to making decisions about going to
war, the environment, education or healthcare.

1. Laurie Gallian recounts her path
to running for a local political office on the City Council of
Sonoma, where she eventually was elected as Mayor. She broke free
from past ghosts of a previous marriage, discovered her passion to
help organizations required people contact, and committed to
listening to her constituents in creating policies for a better way.
After leaving political office she became active in the Soroptomists
International and now leads its chapter in Sonoma County.
Laurie gives good advice for aspiring women to run for local offices
and bring about life enhancing policies. She also encourages people
to choose volunteering activities that are right for them.
About our Guest: Laurie Gallian was elected 2008 to
City Council member, involved directly in making policies for the
City of Sonoma, where she was elected twice and served from
December 2008-2012, 2012-2016 and in 2011 she was elected as mayor
and in 2015 selected by the Council to serve as Mayor Pro Tem. Her education included the League of
California Cities Advanced Leadership Graduate 2011; Laurie also
attended training with Emerge California.
Presently Laurie is the president of the Soroptimist Sonoma County
Chapter. She also serves as member of the Board of Directors
for The Praxis Institute. Reverend Laurie Gallian
was ordained as Universal Life Church Minister in 2010 and
enjoys marrying couples in joy and love. She says: "The future of
love and commitment is a very auspicious occasion and deserves a
respectful, personal, and loving beginning. It is my honor to serve
and marry. I have done many weddings to date of loving couples, same
sex or not. It is better to love than judge."
On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the 19th
amendment, and two weeks later, the Senate followed. When
Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment on
August 18, 1920, the amendment was adopted. It reads: The right
of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or
abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.
Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate
legislation.
The 19th Amendment reads, The right of citizens of the United
States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United
States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have
power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
When we shall have our amendment [for
woman suffrage] . . . everybody will think it was always so
. . . They have no idea of how every single inch of ground that
she stands upon today has been gained by the hard work of some
little handful of women of the past. —Susan B. Anthony, speech at the
National-American Convention, 1894
August 26, 1920 – The 19th
Amendment of the US Constitution is ratified granting
women the right to vote.
August 26, 1970 – Betty Friedan leads a nationwide
protest called the “Women’s Strike for Equality” in New
York City on the fiftieth anniversary of women’s
suffrage.
August 26, 1971 – The first Women’s Equality Day,
initiated by Representative Bella Abzug, is established
by Presidential Proclamation and reaffirmed annually.
August 28, 1963 – More than 250,000 gathers for a march

Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech.
