1. Vesta Copestakes
shares her path, mentored as a young girl by Brenda Starr in the
comic strip that first appeared in the newspapers in 1947, to be
educated as a graphic artist. Vesta took over the Freestone
Chamber of Commerce newsletter in September 2001 as the 911 Terror
was unfolding and she used the newsletter to give voice to concerned
readers who authored the articles. It was an experiment in citizen
journalism. Vesta bought the newsletter in 2003 to publish it as the
the Sonoma County Gazette.
She describes herself as a marketer, bringing local businesses to
the attention of readers through ad supporting the publication of
the free monthly newspaper. In December Vesta sold the newspaper to
the locally owned Sonoma Media Investments, owner of the Press
Democrat and other brands in radio and online, but will remain as
Publisher until she can be replaced.

Copestakes is a Graphic Designer and Publisher for the Sonoma County Gazette was Influenced by the comic
strip Brenda Star as a young girl Vesta took the path of doing what
she loves which lead her to Publishing a newspaper an idea which was
never h on her to-do list and believes it was her graphic design and
editorial skills led right to it. She has taken the path of doing
what I love which has lead her to working within the community of
exceptional individuals. To Vesta nothing is more fulfilling for her
than connecting people through the pages of my newspaper.
Vesta owned and published the Sonoma County Gazette from 2003 until
December 2019 when she sold the paper to Sonoma Media and the
formal announcement was made on December 17, 2019. Vesta will remain
publisher until they find a person to fill her shoes.
2. Karleen Arnink-Pate
describes her path to leadership in the media industry, first
mentored by her mother, who was a working mom. Karleen found work
with her art degree in an advertising firm and she quickly realized
there was opportunity for her in this field. She became a firm
believer in the power of outreach, which made her sales approach
convincing. After leadership positions in the San Francisco
Chronicle and Gannet Company, Karleen joined Sonoma Media
Investments. Karleen was chosen to work on the purchasing deal
of Sonoma County Gazette with Vesta Copestakes because of her
experience with other small papers.

Arnink-Pate is the Chief Revenue Officer for locally owned
Sonoma Media Investments, publishers of the Press
Democrat and a variety of other brands found online and in print.
Previously Karleen served as the Vice President of Strategic Revenue
at the San Francisco Chronicle and sfgate.com/Hearst, and she served
the Hawaii and Nevada markets as Advertising Director for Gannett
Company (publishers of USA Today and over 100 Print, Digital and
Television brands nationwide).
Recognized as an industry leader, Karleen was a national Folio “Top
Women in Media 2019” Honoree, in the Change Maker category &
described as “a woman who has successfully altered the course of
their brand or the industry for the better.” She founded the popular
Sonoma County Women in Conversation speaker series and serves on the
board of Sonoma County CASA and the Steering Committee for United
Way, Women United.
January 4, 1739: Elizabeth Timothy became the first
female in the American colonies to assume the role of publisher of a
newspaper, the South Carolina Gazette, after her husband, Lewis
Timothy, died. She turned the role over to her son, Peter, in May
1746, and died in April 1757.
Sarah Joseph Hale, who began her journalism career
at age 40, while impoverished and raising five children, became the
first female magazine editor of a nationally recognized publication,
when she moved to Philadelphia in 1837 to became literary editor of
Godey's Lady Book, a monthly magazine devoted to morality issues,
literature, and fashions..
Margaret Fuller became literary critic for a major daily newspaper
at the New York Herald Tribune, when Horace Greeley hired her as the
paper's first female staff member. In 1846, she became a foreign
correspondent for the Tribune, when she traveled to Europe and
reported on the Italian revolution of 1847.
Kathryn Elizabeth Smith, known professionally as
Kate Smith and The First Lady of Radio, was an American singer, a
contralto, well known for her rendition of Irving Berlin's "God
Bless America". She had a radio, television, and recording career
spanning five decades, which reached its pinnacle in the 1940s.
